Journal Entry: Bushra Lana (Good News)/An Intermediary Phase

Once again, I had an insightful dream in the morning of 4th Shawwal, 1445; a few days after celebrating Eid al-Fitr.

I saw the last moment of my life as I was passing away; I seemed to be bidding farewell to my family. Then, in the dream, I started to see from the point of view perspective. My burial was taking place, and I was being pulled down into my grave. I could see everything getting darker around me as I observed the horizon and the four corners of the ground as I rested six feet deep under. After being covered completely, I felt the contraction of the side walls. I started to feel scared for my experience in Hereafter. However, there after it started to expand and became spacious. The ground to my right starts unveiling from the top to bottom illuminating my grave as it unpacked to a room like environment. There was a man whose face was as clear as crystal with a fair skin tone dressed in all pure white sitting upright against the wall on a couch. His hair was seemingly white and parted from the middle reaching his broad shoulders. Similarly, he had an aura due to his beard that was white as well which made his appearance shine like a pearl. I felt as if he had been waiting for me. He gets up to embrace and welcome me. I asked him if we had met before because he seemed to have a unique appearance yet familiarity with his presence. He told to me that we had met at the plain of the souls (Alam-e-Arwa), and that he has kept watch on me since and was familiar with the tailored trails and tribulations of my life. He assured me to rest with ease and tranquility as the journey from here on now will be smooth. I started to weep out of awe knowing very well of the fact that I didn’t deserve to be given this glad tiding, yet felt a joy never experienced before waking up from the dream.

Now, I only bring this to the attention of others to mention that the struggle to remain sound in one’s faith should be a continuous task, until our very last breath, as believers in the religion of Islam. It may take form as small deeds, if done correctly with consistency, which can allow us to progress spiritually by staying upright. I am nowhere near perfect, nor do I claim to be righteous or pious, but I do make efforts consistently for an inward spiritual growth and outward practice as per the religion of Islam. Yearning to attain proximity of God (عزَّ وجلَّ) and His Beloved (ﷺ) is something I try to sincerely strive for by enacting the way of those [The Prophets, The Truthful, The Martyrs & The Righteous (Allah’s peace and blessings be upon them all)] who had been successful in following the spiritual path that leads straight to God Almighty’s acceptance & pleasure. May Allah (swt) always keep us sincere and steadfast on Islam as our way of life and grant us a good end with the last of our words to be the Testimony of Faith [لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا ٱللَّٰهُ مُحَمَّدٌ رَسُولُ ٱللَّٰهِ – There is no deity worthy of worship save God (alone), and that Muhammad (ﷺ) is His servant & final messenger]. I ask Allah (عزَّ وجلَّ) to make the transitionary phase that is a barrier (Barzakh) between this life and the Hereafter to be better than this temporal abode as we hope for our soul to register in ‘Illiyeen’, God-willingly, and reunite with those who we love in the Hereafter.

The sentiment after this experience that resonates with me is from the poem “The House of healing” by Abū Muḥammad ibn Abū Sāliḥ ʿAbdol-Qāder al-Gīlānī al-Ḥasanī wa’l-Ḥusaynī, also known as ‘Abd-ol-Qāder Gīlāni (Persian: عبدالقادر گیلانی‎; 23 March 1078 – 21 February 1166). Gilani was a 12th-century faqih, Islamic scholar, theologian, and mystic originally from Gilan, Iran.

[English Translation]:

Until eternity, oh Lord, in Your Favours I have hope

If I lose hope in You, from where could I ever gain hope?

Much of my life I lived in defiance: See me not defiant

I have been unfaithful, but in Your Faithfulness I have hope

I am a pauper and a stranger, helpless, ailing and weak

In one cup’s medicine of the House of Healing, I have hope

I know that in the end Your Way is Forgiveness

Because of that, in Your Endless Mercy I have hope

Everyone places their hope in God, yet in others too

But for a lifetime I seek [only] You, and in You [alone] I have hope

You saw all I have done, yet You concealed with Graciousness

And You know well why I have hope in You

As, bit by bit, the grave’s soil takes me apart

With every bit, in God’s Grace I have hope

Repeatedly, I spoke and acted badly and remained the same

Despite of these transgressions, in Forgiveness I have hope

The light of my eyes has weakened from my tears, oh beloved

Now, from Your Place’s Healing Kohl, I have hope

This ghazal, “Dar-osh-shafa”, is a love-poem dedicated to God, Glorified and Exalted is He. ‘Abdol-Qader Gilani expresses his hope in the Mercy, Forgiveness and Grace of God. In the face of his mortality and fallibility, he expresses his regrets, but nevertheless places his trust and hope in God, Mighty and Majestic is He.

Journal Entry: Dream of Entering the Sacred Chamber

I have been consistent with my salutations on the prophet Muhammad ﷺ for some period. And, recently I have set a daily routine to recite the salutations & prayer upon him ﷺ from ‘Dalayl al-Khayrat’ by Imam Muhammad Al-Juzuli. My desire to see him ﷺ in a dream have been there ever since my spiritual vision (Green Dome & Minaret) of Masjid-e-Nabawi in Medina, which is where his ﷺ burial place is, in an awaken state during the time I was hospitalized in 2021 because of an unusual cause which occured by the will & decree of Allah (swt) of course.

The month of Rabi-ul-Awwal 1445 AH has arrived & it’s the month of his ﷺ birth which happen to occur on a Monday according to some of the Islamic scholars, historian & biographers of His ﷺ life (seerah); they note his departure from this temporal world in the month of Rabi-ul-Awwal, which also takes place on a Monday. The lovers of his ﷺ rejoice in account of the birth of their beloved prophet Muhammad ﷺ during this month praising him even more than the usual.

On the early morning of Tuesday the 4th of Rabi-ul-Awwal 1445 AH, I had a dream. I happened to walk upon a chamber, a house made of mud. At the gates were two people standing and pointing at me to come inside. To the right was a man wearing a pointed helmet with a green cloth wrapped around it on his head and a beige/camel garment. Standing beside him was a woman with the garment similar in color and wearing a green hijab. I couldn’t see both of their faces because it was radiant & bright as a light. As soon as I entered through the gate of the house, I kept walking straight ahead towards a see through curtain where I could see someone laying down on a straw mat cot. When I reached near the curtain, it pulled to my left side; I saw at first the reclining posture of a man wearing a pure white thobe laying on his right side with his head resting on his arms. My eye sight went blur as I saw his face. However, it was clear as crystal within a matter of seconds. His hair was black, wavy and long up to his neck parted from the middle, a slightly round face with fair skin tone of beige complexion & peachy cheeks. The symmetry of his nose perfectly proportioned, neither thick nor thin, bridging straight down between the eyes. He had, neither too thick nor thin, curved eye brows and his eyes were downturned & dreamy with thick eyelashes matching his coarse beard which was black, full, niether short nor too long. He had a captivating smile on his face with a glow around it which made me want to continue staring his face until I looked down out of having etiquette realizing that the man I was looking at was none other than prophet Muhammad ﷺ. The description of his ﷺ appearance was fitting accordingly with what I acknowledged myself through reading ‘ash-Shama’il al-Muhammadiyya’ by Imam Al-Tirmidhi. I couldn’t hold back my tears, and so I sat down before him ﷺ crying not knowing whether it was tears of joy or being ashamed and feeling unworthy of his ﷺ holy & noble presence. I remember the highlight of our conversation being the mention of Iron as a metal, and about the people (Tatars) from the Turkic ethnic groups.

There maybe not much significance to this, but I know that the barrier (Iron gates) between his ﷺ resting place carries a historic precedence of rulers from different muslim ethnic groups adding a monumental value in safeguarding the place of his ﷺ place of burial. So, to see the realities of what is beyond that barrier takes a constant need for connecting with the prophet Muhammad ﷺ spiritually by sending many salutations on him ﷺ regularly, especially, if we want him ﷺ to get to know us individually. I have no doubt in my heart, that those two people in the dream who invited me inside the ‘chamber’ was Hazrat Ali Ibn Abi Talib & Hazrat Fatima al-Zahra (May Allah’s peace & blessings be upon them). May Allah (swt) allow us all to meet & greet the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in this life, physically & spiritually, and be able to anxiously wait our turn to get called with our names to the ‘Hawd Al-kawthar’ (Pond of Abundance) by our beloved prophet Muhammad ﷺ in the Hereafter quenching our thirst from the blessed hands of the beloved ﷺ to the beloved Insha’Allah.

I’m only sharing this experience for the purpose of getting other Muslim men & women to believe with certainty in the true reality of seen & the unseen with conviction, SubhanAllah (Glory be to Allah). Have full certitude in the significance of which a sincere prayer can have in this life & the Hereafter Bi’ithnillah (by Allah’s will), Alhamdulillah (All praise belongs to Allah) .

Allah sends His Salât (Graces, Honours, Blessings, Mercy) on the Prophet and also His angels (ask Allah to bless and forgive him). O you who believe! Send your Salât on (ask Allah to bless him), and (you should) greet (salute) him with the Islamic way of greeting (salutation i.e. As¬Salâmu ‘Alaikum)”- [Al-Ahzaab 33:56].

O Allah! Send Your Mercy on Muhammad and on the family of Muhammad, as You sent Your Mercy on Abraham and on the family of Abraham, for You are the Most Praise-worthy, the Most Glorious.

O Allah! Send Your Blessings on Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You sent your Blessings on Abraham and on the family of Abraham, for You are the Most Praise-worthy, the Most Glorious. – (Sahih Bukhari)

Diligence during the Daily Prayer (An Islamic View)

Diligence during the Daily Prayer (An Islamic View)

It’s understood that human beings are created weak and in a state of forgetfulness. And, regardless of our continued efforts, we remain imperfect during the process to reach the level of praising Allah (swt) through worship as He, the Possessor of All Might and Majesty, ought to be entirely deserving awe for His Divine sublimity. As Muslims, most of the time, we struggle to keep up with our daily obligatory prayers prescribed for us as an honor during the most beautiful event (Al’Isra Wal-Mi’raj) in the history of mankind when the most beloved to Allah, Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), was ascended beyond the physical realm of this earth crossing the celestial realm of the seven Heavens accompanied by the Angels, Prophets & Messengers (May Allah’s peace & blessings be upon them All) until he (ﷺ) came in the presence of his Lord, The Most-High.

An interesting way to go about praying while feeling Khushu (Complete devotion and mindfulness towards Allah, The Exalted) and becoming less distracted is to perceive it as a gift by which souls can take delight in and experience the proximity of God, The Benevolent. We know prayer is the means of direct communication between the Lord Almighty and His servants. It has been stated by the Salaf Al-Salih (Pious Predecessors), “The Salah (Prayer) is the Mi’raj (Ascension) for the Mu’min (believer).”

Abu Huraira (رضي الله عنه) reported: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “The servant is closest to his Lord during Sujud (prostration), so increase your supplications therein.” [Sahih Muslim 482]

Internalize the following with the certainty of belief & complete conviction in the world of the unseen as you stand up for Salah (prayer) hoping to lead your spirit to ascend towards the nearness of God Almighty:

1) Begin praying as if it is your last. Imagine Hazrat Izraeel, the angel of death, arriving to take your soul by the command of Allah (ﷻ). Remember death as a reality that is to come upon all at an appointed time.

2) Kiraman-Katibin (the noble scribes), an angel on the right shoulder penning down our good thoughts, intentions, and action. Whereas, the angel on the left shoulder notes the evils of our Nafs (self) and whispers of Shaitan (Satan) that take the form of bad thoughts causing distraction from our ultimate goal; to be in the complete submission of our Lord.

3) Ahead of you are Munkir and Nakir, the two angels, who will visit your grave for interrogation. Then, we will come to know of the life of Al-Barzakh (the period between death and resurrection on the Day of Resurrection after the final hour.) Think about whether our soul registers in Illyeen (the place belonging to where the good souls take residence) or is it bounded to Sijjeen (where those souls who disbelieved are imprisoned and damned).

4) Before you conclude the prayer by saying “Asalamu Alaykum Wa’rehmatallah” (Peace be upon you and God’s mercy) and point your head to the right shoulder and then to the left shoulder. ” Imagine the scene of the Akhira (Hereafter). To the right is Paradise and the gates of Heavens, where the guardian of it is the Angel by the name of Ridwan (عليه السلام) who takes pleasure in saying “Asalamun Alaykum” (Peace be upon you) to the fortunate inhabitants. And, to the left is the blazing fire of Hell where its custodian Angel Malik (عليه السلام) stands in seriousness without a smile never to flinch due to the severity of his role to punish its unfortunate dwellers by the command of Allah (ﷻ).

Al-Bara’ ibn ‘Azib reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Verily, when the believer is ready to depart the world and is facing the Hereafter, angels from heaven descend with bright faces, as if their faces were the sun, with them are the shrouds and perfumes of Paradise, until they sit from him a distance as far as the eye can see. Then, the angel of death, upon him be peace, comes until he sits by his head and he says: O pure soul, come out to the forgiveness of Allah and His pleasure! He takes it out like a drop from a water-skin and holds it, never to leave his hand for the blink of an eye until he places it in that shroud and perfume. The scent coming from it is more pleasant than any musk you would find on the face of the earth. He ascends and passes by no gathering of angels but that they say: What a pure spirit! They say he is this person, son of this person, calling him by the best names by which he was known in the world until he stops at the lowest heaven and seeks entry and it will be opened for him. The company of each heaven brings him closer to the heaven following it until he stops at the seventh heaven. Allah Almighty will say: Write the record of My servant in the righteous register and return him to the earth, for from it I created them, to it I return them, and from it, I will take them out once again. His spirit will be returned to his body and two angels will come to sit by him, saying to him: Who is your Lord? He will say: My Lord is Allah. They will say: What is your religion? He will say: My religion is Islam. They will say: Who is this man sent to you? He will say: He is the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. They will say: How did you know? He will say: I read the Book of Allah, had faith in it, and believed in it. A heavenly announcement will be made: My servant has spoken the truth! Spread out carpets for him in Paradise, clothe him for Paradise, and open a gate for him to Paradise! Its comforts and fragrances will come to him and his grave will become spacious as far as his eye can see. A handsome man, with fine clothes and wonderful fragrance, will come and say: Glad tidings of what pleases you, for this was your Day you were promised! He will say: Who are you with such a handsome face? He will say: I am your righteous deeds! He will say: O Lord, begin the Hour that I may return to my family and property!

The Prophet continued, “Verily, when the unbeliever is ready to depart the world and is facing the Hereafter, angels descend from heaven with darkened faces and with them sack-cloth. They will sit away from his as far as the eye can see. Then, the angel of death approaches until he sits by his head and he says: O filthy soul, come out to the displeasure of Allah and His wrath! He will be separated from his body like the tearing of skewers from wet wool and he holds it in his hand, never to leave it for the blink of an eye, until he places it in this sack-cloth. The scent coming from it is like the most foul corpse found upon the face of the earth. They will ascend with him and not pass by a gathering of angels but that they say: What a filthy spirit! They say he is this person, son of this person, calling him by the ugliest names by which he was known in the world, until he stops at the lowest heaven. They will request it to be opened for him but it will not open.” Then, the Prophet recited the verse, “The gates of heaven will never open for them, nor will they enter Paradise, until the camel goes through the eye of the needle,” (Holy Quran, 7:40). The Prophet said, “Allah Almighty will say: Write his record in the wicked register in the lowest earth. His spirit will be thrown down,” then the Prophet recited the verse, “It is as though he had fallen from the sky and was snatched by the birds or the wind carried him down into a remote place,” (Holy, Quran, 22:31). The Prophet said, “His spirit will return to his body and two angels will come to sit by him, saying to him: Who is your Lord? He will say: Uh, uh, I do not know! They will say: What is your religion? He will say: Uh, uh, I do not know! They will say: Who is this man sent to you? He will say: Uh, uh, I do not know! A heavenly announcement will be made: He has lied! Spread carpets for him in Hellfire and open a gate for him to Hellfire! Its heat and its flames will approach him, and he will be squeezed in his grave until his ribs press together. An ugly man, with hideous clothing and a foul stench, will approach him and say: Glad tidings of what despairs you, for this is your Day you were promised! He will say: Who are with your evil face? He will say: I am your wicked deeds! He will say: O Lord, do not begin the Hour!

May Allah (ﷻ) always allow us to continuously be in a state of Tawba (repentance) & constantly seek His forgiveness. May He (ﷻ) include us as His sincere devotees. Ya Allah (ﷻ) keep us protected from the evils of our Nafs (self) and the Waswas (whispers) of Shaitan (Satan). May He (ﷻ) allow us to have a good ending in this world and the Akhira (Hereafter). SECRETS

[1]

Do you have a secret with Allah,

Between you and between Allah;

Do you have good deeds that you hide,

that no one knows except Allah.

[2]

Stories that do not get revealed except,

through your book (of deeds) when you face Allah;

What brings you more freedom than that,

which elevates your status with Allah.

Upon hearing the recital of this beautiful couplet, “Secrets” by Ridjaal Ahmed, Ahmad felt his veins pulsating and he gets goosebumps by listening to each word as if it was meant only for him to be heard by his Creator, Allah (The Possessor of Might & Majesty).

Ahmad reads the Quran at night and listens to the commentary by the great late Pakistani philosopher, Dr. Israr Ahmed, during the day. Upon surfacing his social media (Facebook), he comes across the death anniversary of both influencers, Allamah Muhammad Iqbal & Dr. Israr Ahmed, with whom he has taken inspiration in learning Islamic theology, history & philosophy over a period. Thus, he intends to spend time as it’s his last day before he returns to his Lord in the blessed month of Ramadan. Ahmad starts doing a lot of Dhikr (remembrance) of God during early morning and late evening. Also, he would keep himself awake at night for prayer. At the time of each prayer, it would appear to him as if inanimate objects (i.e., fridge, TV) is praising along with him to his Lord through vibration & static. He would feel the presence of angels in the house at the time of night prayer. His connection grew stronger towards his Lord every time he praises Him, The Almighty, after each prayer through immense Dhikr (remembrance). He would feel as though he is in sync with the angels up above in the Heavens at Bayt al Ma’mur chanting the praise with him “Labbayka Allahumma labbayk, labbayka laa shareeka laka labbayk. Inna al-hamd wa’l-ni’mata laka wa’l-mulk, laa shareeka lak” [Here I am, O Allah, here I am. Here I am, You have no partner, here I am. Verily all praise and blessings are Yours, and all sovereignty, You have no partner]. Bayt al Ma’mur, also known as the “Frequented House”, is a prototype of Ka’bah, the House of Allah (Glory be to Him, The Exalted), and it is located outside of the human realm. It is located directly above the Ka’bah in the highest Heaven, i.e., the seventh Heaven, and just above it, is Allah’s throne. This sacred and Holy house is also mentioned in Surah Tur of the Holy Quran, where Allah (The Most-Compassionate) says: “And by the Bait-ul-Ma’mur (the house over the heavens parable to the Ka’bah at Mecca, continuously visited by the angels)” (At-Tur 52:4)

During one of the evenings, he goes to the park with his brother for their regular walk. To their surprise, however, they observe a flock of birds on the field as they made their way to the forest. He had never seen such a sight before with that many birds spread across the field. Ahmad comes to a realization that this Ramadan is going to be special.

Ahmad had a frequent habit of sending salutations to the prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), but he increases it more so in these blessed days of Ramadan. On Friday evening, an hour before sunset, he puts on the recitation of the praise of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in Qasida Burda Sharif (The Poem of the mantle) by Imam al-Busiri. Just as he opens the fast along with his family, he notices a calm coolness wrapping around him. Each time he would drink water the coolness would remain. His family feels a similar effect as well and enjoys it with tremendous tranquility within the surrounding.

Meanwhile, Ahmad’s family slightly shows concern about the circumstance he was in. Yet, he explains to them to bear patience as this is something from the unseen and that any occurrence of the unusual is from the supernatural. One night, after reciting the Quran, he sends salutations to the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). During the recital, Ahmad hears a loud bang like the sound of thunder as if the sky had split open. Suddenly, his chest starts to feel tightening, and he starts to lose his breath while he finds trouble carrying on further with his speech. He could feel his heart pumping slowly and beating across his chest. He lets go of the book from which he has been reading the salutation upon the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and gets up panicking.

He goes downstairs to his mother and tells her about his situation. She tells him that he needs to sleep and rest. Ahmad thinks to himself as if Malak ul Maut (angel of death), Hazrat Azrael (Allah’s peace & blessings be upon him), had come knocking on his door. If that is the case, he didn’t feel ready to depart from this world just yet. In his mind, he still needs to build on his record of good deeds. While eating at the time of Suhoor, he starts to feel a chill breeze and mentions it to his mother. She offers him tea and realizes that she too feels the chill breeze. Upon drinking hot tea, he feels the warmth in his body.

Before dawn, he stands for the prayer with his father beside him and his mother behind them. As soon as he listens to the recitation of the Holy Quran which his father reads aloud during the prayer, his body slowly leans forward bowing towards the ground and he drops on the floor on his back and his arms wide open. During his fall, he hears a gush of wind outside in his backyard, and his parents call him by his name to get up with a worrisome tone in their voice. However, his body seems to have been paralyzed as he says the Kalimah Shahadat [testimony of faith] “Ashaduan la ilaha illallahu wahdahu la sharikalu wa ashadu anna Muhammadan abduhu wa Rasuluhu” [I bear witness that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, the One alone, without a partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger]. While saying this, he hears the draining of water flow. His father brings a pillow and places it under his head. The tone in the manner of Ahmad’s speech softens & he rests in tranquility. Eventually, his eyes open. His parents indicate that he needs sleep. He tries to get up, but his body feels too weak to push himself. As he stands back up, he feels a shooting pain in his heart as if someone had pinched it. His parents wrap him in a blanket and bring him to his room so he can rest on his bed.

Hadith (Narration of the Prophetic sayings & tradition) where the incident of the purification of our beloved Prophet Muhammad’s (ﷺ) Heart took place:

Anas b. Malik (رضي الله عنه) reported that Jibreal (عليه السلام) came to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) while he was playing with his playmates. He took hold of him and lay him prostrate on the ground and tore open his breast and took out the heart from it and then extracted a blood clot out of it and said: That was the part of Satan in thee. And then he washed it with the water of Zamzam in a golden basin and then it was joined together and restored to its place. The boys came running to his mother, i. e. his nurse, [Haleemah As-Sa’diyyah] and said: Verily Muhammad has been murdered. They all rushed toward him (and found him all right); his color was changed, Anas said. I myself saw the marks of the needle on his breast. (Muslim)

This incident involved spiritual purification but was manifested in a physical, tangible manner. The removal of the blood clot purified the Prophet (ﷺ) from the immaturity, foolishness, and recklessness of youth. The incident also shows us the degree to which Allah protected the Prophet (ﷺ) and prevented Shaitaan (Satan) from having any influence over him whatsoever. (The Noble Life of the Prophet, peace be upon him, by Dr. ‘Ali Muhammad As-Sallaabee)

Notes: Ahmad gets a reception from the archangels, Mikail and Ruh al-Amin (Holy Spirit), Jibreal, Allah’s peace & blessings be upon them. Hazrat Mikail (عليه السلام) is the angel of Allah who has been assigned the task of maintaining the natural events that sustain life on Earth by the order of Allah. These tasks include pouring rainfall, changing seasons, the blowing wind, and managing the supplications of Allah’s creations. Hazrat Jibreal (Allah’s peace & blessings be upon him) is the angel responsible to bring Wahy (revelations) to the Messengers & Prophets of Allah (Glorious is He, The Exalted One). The occurrence of an angelic intermediary binds the spiritual connection between those (Prophets & Messengers) chosen to the Divinity of Allah (God). Therefore, these elected Prophets & Messengers (May Allah’s peace & blessings be upon them) were responsible for spiritual enlightenment in humanity by presenting God’s law, legislation & knowledge on earth which were set before mankind for them to attest towards the manifestation of God in His, The Possessor of Might & Majesty, absolute unity. The door to revelation has been shut closed with the death of the seal of the prophethood, the final prophet & messenger of Allah, Muhammad (ﷺ). However, there remain glad tidings of the prophethood in a form of a good vision and dreams that come true. This happens to the righteous servants who try relentlessly in attaining proximity to their Lord and in the process receive Ilham (inspiration) through the Holy Spirit with certain knowledge perceived in their hearts as Divine grace. That being said, Only God knows best. We shouldn’t accept information as being valid if it doesn’t align with the teachings from the Holy Quran & the methodologies from the Sunnah (Sayings & Traditions) of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). O Allah! Show us the truth as truth and enable us to observe it, and show us falsehood as falsehood and enable us to avoid it. And bestow Your blessings and peace upon our master, Muhammad, and on His Family and Companions, altogether.

Every time Ahmad would try to go to sleep, he hears strong wind creeping outside his bedroom window. He couldn’t help but feel his heartbeat slowing down and experience shortness of breath every time he would keep a shut eye. This carries on for a bit as he becomes restless thinking he is going to pass away if he sleeps. After a day or two, when the sun rises just after dawn, he internalizes within himself the chapter in the Holy Quran, Surah Yaseen. The voice in his head directs him to imagine it as the veil of a bride worn for adornment. He knew that this chapter is commonly referred to as being the heart of the Quran. Immediately, he thinks of someone that is beloved to him. As soon as the thought of her occupies his mind, he stops hearing the wind blowing right away. After a brief pause, he gets up to observe and listen to birds chirping outside his window. He gets up in excitement from his bed and wakes up his parents. Ahmad tells them to prepare for a celebration because today he finally unites with his beloved. However, he realizes he may have committed a major sin by associating a partner with his Lord by carrying love for a significant other beside his Lord in his heart. Suddenly, he starts to panic and says that he can’t commit shirk (Polytheism) and he wouldn’t want to be guilty of this grave sin even if it was unintentional. He runs into the bathroom. His brother knocks on the door and tells him with great concern to just go to bed. He yells at him to get away from his sight. He gets in the shower and pours hot water on himself to feel the heat of it scorching his skin. After taking the shower, he warps himself with a white towel. He goes into his room and closes the door behind him. He takes out the prayer mat and falls into prostration with his head placed on the ground towards the direction of the Holy Ka’aba in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. He states with humility, “Labbayka Allahumma labbayk, labbayka laa shareeka laka labbayk. Inna al-hamd wa’l-ni’mata laka wa’l-mulk, laa shareeka lak” [Here I am, O Allah, here I am. Here I am, You have no partner, here I am. Verily all praise and blessings are Yours, and all sovereignty, You have no partner]. After repeating it several times, he starts asking for forgiveness by saying, “Astaghfirullah rabbi min kulli zambiyon wa atoobu ilaiyh” [I seek forgiveness in Allah from all my sins and repent to Him] out loud in a mild manner with a concerned voice. Meanwhile, his parents who seem confused at this point open the door of Ahmad’s room and ask him to stop whatever he appears to be doing. He didn’t stop, rather shouts the words he was uttering loudly as if he has been possessed. They let him be and shut the door behind them. Now Ahmad realizes he has no control over him. Between his chanting, he notices himself taking intervals where he would cry. This initiates him to think of it as the voice of the dwellers of hell being punished. It repeats a few times after the supplication for forgiveness. Then, he notices his feet drag from being on their toes to laying flat, his hands fall flat from being upright, his nose presses against the surface of the mat running a little and his forehead scratches slightly from the middle in the process of being dragged forward. As his body crumbles in this position, he makes a humming noise after. Then, he drops on the left side of his body with his hands crossed. His right hand is fisted with the index finger pointing towards the ground over his left-hand which is placed facing up with his palm exposed. Upon this occurrence, he thinks of his body as an embodiment of this world and how it will perish. Bringing upon Allah’s creation, seen & unseen, the dreadful day of judgement on which their accounts will be set and His, Almighty God, justice will prevail. Finally, he gets up and puts on his clothes. He opens the door of his room and asks his parents if he can come to sit with them as they were patiently sitting on the bed.

Introspection from the Holy Quran & Hadiths (Prophetic Saying & tradition):

Shirk (Polytheism) is the act of associating Allah with partners in Divinity. This is the only sin that Allah considers unforgivable, as it violates the primary tenet of Islam, which is a pure Monotheistic belief in God.

“Verily, Allah forgives not the sin of setting up partners in worship with Him, but He forgives whom He wills sins other than that. And whoever sets up partners in worship with Allah, has indeed strayed far from the path.” (An-Nisa 4:116)

Notes: Ahmad attests to his belief in accordance with pure Islamic monotheism. He witnesses the signs of the last hour and the day of judgment when the Trumpet will be blown by the angel, Hazrat Israfeel (peace be upon him). The Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) has told us that the one who will blow the Trumpet has been ready to do so since Allah created him, as it is narrated in al-Mustadrak from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “The gaze of the one who will blow the Trumpet has been fixed since he was entrusted with it, looking towards the throne of Allah, ready (to blow it), in case he will be commanded to do so before he blinks as if his eyes are two shining stars.” Classed as Saheeh (authentic) by al-Albaani in al-Silsilah al-Saheehah, 1078. Hazrat Israfeel (peace be upon him) is the angel who has been assigned the task of blowing the trumpet on the Day of Judgment. He is also known as the angel of Soor (the Trumpet). He will blow the Trumpet twice. On the first time, Doomsday would happen. On the second blow, everyone shall be resurrected.

“On the Day when the Blast reverberates, and the second blast follows, hearts will tremble, eyes will be downcast. They say: What! Shall we be brought back to life after we have turned into decayed bones? They say: that would truly be a fateful return! But all it will take is a single blast, and see, they will be back above the ground! (Al-Nāziʿāt 79:6-14)

The blast will reverberate through creation. The earth will convulse, the mountains will disintegrate, and the oceans will boil over. Everything will be destroyed, and everyone will die.

“The Trumpet will be sounded and behold! They will rush out to their Lord from their graves. They will say, ‘Woe to us! Who has resurrected us from our resting place?’ They will be told, ‘This is what the Lord of Mercy has promised, and the messengers told the truth.’ It was just one single blast and then – behold! They were all brought before Us. Today no soul will be wronged in the least; you will only be repaid for your deeds.” (Yā Sīn 36:51)

“And We will set up a just balance on the day of resurrection, so no soul shall be dealt with unjustly in the least; and though there be the weight of a grain of mustard seed, (yet) will We bring it, and sufficient are We to take account.” (Al-Anbiya 21:47)

Later that morning, Ahmad goes outside for a walk. Upon leaving his house, he observes nature and the environment to be auspicious. People greet him as he follows the usual trail nearby. He greets them back by saying salaam (greeting of peace). He walks over the bridge that comes on the way to the park close to his house. It makes it seem familiar to him as the bridge of Sirat in the Hereafter, where true believers will pass over it quickly, some will find some difficulty crossing it but will eventually find relief, and others will slip and fall in the pits of Hell. As he comes near the park, he could hear his beloved talking to him in a mysterious way as if she is waiting for him there. He becomes shy as he makes his way to the middle of the field. He rests on his back looking straight up into the glare of the sun until it turns green. He finds himself to be in a state of contentment. At this point, he gets a call from his father. He tells him about his experience, however, his father insists he should return home. On his way back home, he takes another route. When he came to the street of his house, his father calls him to check in again about his whereabouts. He picks Ahmad up and they come back home. In the afternoon, his family gathered in the living room. Ahmad sits down with them, and they suggest that he should go to the emergency. He agrees to the idea of checking himself in the hospital.

He goes to the emergency with aid from his father. His body starts to shut down with weakness. He was brought a wheelchair to sit down on. From there his mind starts to fade out. He tells the administrative staff about his condition and that he had been hallucinating due to lack of sleep, fasting, and reading extensively over the past week or so. They move him to a different setting in the waiting room. After a while, he gets up to look around for his father forgetting that he has been admitted to the hospital. A nurse catches him in the hallway wandering and brings him to a room with a bed in it. After a short period of nonattendance, a lady doctor comes to the room and inputs his biodata into the computer which was on the right side of the bed. She tells him to remember todays date before leaving and veils over the bed curtain for privacy. The door of the room is kept open. After, a man who Ahmad perceives as being unpleasant walks in and inserts a needle in Ahmad’s left arm, and leaves. As Ahmad begins to rest, he hears people walking by the corridor. He recognizes some of the voices which resemble the likes of his extended family members who he thinks are coming to him for visit. He feels their presence in the room and imagines them passing through him onto the other side (hereafter) as if he was a vessel of intercession for them to reach the gates of Heaven. He gets up and stares at the light which was in the room. The middle of it turns into a round shape appearing to him as a pearl. He asks the security guard standing outside his room to direct him toward the washroom. He goes in it and takes out the needle from his arm which starts to bleed after pulling it out. He cleans up and washes his hand until the bleeding stops and comes back to his room. A nurse comes with a gown for him to change into and a form for him to read. In the form, it states that he has not been subjected to depression and that his mental health is completely fine. He is pleased to read this form. Ahmad puts on the gown thinking he is being prepared to meet his family. Instead, he gets shifted to another room.

This room is different than the previous one. The mechanical bed was narrow and pinned against the wall. There was quite more space to walk around, however, the door is shut and locked. Ahmad sits on the bed and sees a table that has a box with a sandwich in it. He eats the sandwich and drinks some juice that he finds on the desk as well. His memory at this point becomes hazy and he starts to black out even more. He uncovers the bed sheet, which was blue in color, and throws it on the ground. The room becomes warm. Another lady doctor enters the room and asks him questions regarding his mental health. Though he isn’t consciously aware of his surrounding, his speech remains eloquent in explaining to her that being in this room makes him uncomfortable because it reminds him of someone he knows who is subjected to mental health illness. He elaborates further to her that he and this individual share a mutual interest in religious studies. However, the person he is talking about doesn’t practice as much of it and has a flawed understanding. After the brief conversation, the doctor leaves and comes back with a book that he can read if he wants. The book was titled, “The Trials of Apollo: The Hidden Oracle” by Richard Riordan. He reads the back cover of it and thinks to himself that his life story is being published as a New York bestseller. As if he pictures himself being in a different time and space. While he rests, he hears the voice of his parents and siblings coming from a far distance. He gets up from the bed and rushes to the door. He stares outside the window frame at the security officer sitting on the desk and points his right-hand index finger to his heart. Then, he falls to the ground and goes back to his bed to rest. This happens continuously and each time the security officer nods his head indicating he has to stay in bed. The light turns off and he stays in bed patiently this time with his index finger still pointing toward his heart. With each beat of the drum of his heart, he notices the voices of his nephew, nieces, siblings, and parents drawing nearer along with the sound of a lawn mower in the background. The light in the room turns on and he sits up on the bed this time. He hears a collective chant “Allahu Akbar” [God’s the Greatest], as one would hear a group say with their voices in sync, and feels a rush flow down from his head to toe. He picks up the bed sheet from the floor and puts it back on the bed. The room begins to feel chilly. He makes his way to the door, and it opens with four security guards hesitating to bring the wheelchair forward fearing to enter before Ahmad. He goes to the washroom to relieve himself first. Then, he sits in the wheelchair and they take him to a different section.

Ahmad is brought to an isolated room that has a lounging area with a television, a washroom, and four other rooms. He takes a seat with a registered nurse who tells him why he is there and questions him if he’s under the influence of any drugs. Ahmad tells him he hasn’t taken drugs and his condition is simply due to fasting, retaining intensive information, and sleep deprivation. He gets addressed to go to one of the rooms. The room had a decent bed for him to rest on. However, there was a colored glass block window that made the room seem dull. He eats a meal shortly after which is brought to him. Ahmad would occupy his time creating a scenario using plastic cutleries & jugs. He would sometimes place the jugs in the middle of the wall making them stand together facing opposite sides of the corner. One jug faces the right corner the other faces the left. He would sit on his bed and observe. This representation is for the angels, Kiraman Katibin (Honorable Scribers), on each of his shoulders. He remembers that the good deeds are written down by the angel on his right, and bad deeds by the angel on his left. Sometimes he would rearrange the setting. For example, once he would finish eating his meal. He would place the tray with cutlery in the middle, the jugs on the right-hand corner facing the parallel wall on the left, and the garbage (juice, milk, and yogurt container) in the left-hand corner. To his understanding, the tray and cutlery represented the spectation of Allah, Al-Raqib [The All-Observant] in our lives. The two jugs on the right side were streams of guidance; The Holy Quran [The Direct & non-interchangeable speech of Allah] & the Sunnah (Prophetic teaching & tradition) of the His last and final messenger, Muhammad (Allah’s peace & blessings be upon him). The garbage on the left was to distinguish the misguidance of the wrongdoers and the existence of evil in this world. Ahmad is hardly allowed to come outside his room due to his unusual behavior. At first, he kept banging on the door, shouting at the people he sees through the window in the administration office to let him out. A day or two later, he is permitted to come out of his room into the lounging area. He looks inside the other rooms out of curiosity and finds the other patients to be doing uncommon things. He sees a girl with her hair covered over her face who seems to be bewitched by an evil spirit. Another one, who is present with him in the lounge, doesn’t respond when Ahmad tries making a conversation. She would just stare at him and keep a very subservient glance. Another person who was in the last room near the door of the main hallway stares at Ahmad when he looks inside. This patient murmurs in a strange way as if he was performing magic. He had arranged things in his room similarly to the way Ahmad did. Upon observing this, Ahmad yells at him. Both exchange a long stare until Ahmad makes him uncomfortable with his ferocious glare and he looks away. Whenever Ahmad is let out of his room he sits down to watch television or walks back and forth in the lounge to not be idle. He looks through the window of the administration office and finds comfort in being able to see a group of people besides just the patients. He acknowledges that he needs to bear patience and believe with certainty only Allah knows when he will be back to normalcy. His time in the room would consume by making Adhaan (Call to prayer) and praying sometimes. Also, he picks up his old habit of doing push-ups in the evening so he can stay active. During the night, the light that is placed above the wall in his room would turn on. He remains consistent on staring at it until it would change its shape from rectangular to round from the center appearing to him as a pearl once again. One night, as he was staring at the light, he sees the shape of a dome with a minaret appear which reminded him of the resting place of his Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) in the city of Medina, Saudi Arabia. He starts to cry in awe of receiving such a blessed sight knowing he doesn’t deserve to be in this lofty position.

After passing of few days, he is now able to access the main hallway and explore more amenities on the floor. He meets more patients who have separate rooms which weren’t isolated, unlike the one Ahmad is in. The staff working there would regularly keep a check on him by taking his blood pressure and giving him medicine. As he makes his way to the cafeteria, he encounters two girls drawing. He goes up to them and sees their art, the detail of which is illustrative & vivid. He observes on the paper a luscious garden, white horses with wings flying across the clouds, and a radiant rainbow over it. He goes back to the hallway which is long and has good space for him to walk. So, he keeps himself active by walking a lot in the hallway along with another old man who carries a rosary prayer bead in his hand all the time. Then, he makes his way to see the sunshine over the plants that were placed on the table in the cafeteria. He looks up towards the sky and promises to himself to try to never take Allah’s, The Guardian, creation for granted ever. Each time he asks for water from the staff, after having a few sips, he pours the rest into each plant knowing well of the reward of servitude for His, The Most-Merciful, sake from his Creator, The One & Only. On the same floor, he finds a room with books and movie cassettes which intrigues him. He uses the payphone to make a call to his parents asking when he can come home now that he is feeling better and healthy again. But, he senses that it’s a matter of a few more days. Meanwhile, he notices that some of the patients draw their attention to him for partaking in activities, and Ahmad would make sure they receive his company pleasantly. A week or so later, he is transferred to the room in the hallway and gets access to his cell phone. He reaches out to his family and connects back to reality. He realizes that he has to take the prescribed medication in order for him to not revert to his psychosis for the time being. However, it is made certain to him that his experience is unique for only he to believe in its occurrence as a supernatural event. When Ahmad’s father came to pick him up, he bade the patients who were at his sight and the staff farewell. As they head out, the old man with the prayer bead in his hand stops before them and tells Ahmad’s father that his son is a good man. Upon hearing this, Ahmad was truly humbled. He comes back home and finds himself in gratitude of Allah, The Unique, to allow him to go through this spiritual enlightenment that made him further develop a positive outlook on life. In the end, the reward for him was a reunion with his family and concluding the blessed month of Ramadan in celebration of Eid together with them.

Do the people think that they will be left alone after they have once said, “We have believed,” and they will not be tested? The fact is that we have put to test all those who have gone before them. Surely, Allah has to see who is truthful and who the liars are. And do those who are committing evil deeds reckon that they will outstrip Us? Evil is their judgment. Whoever expects to meet Allah (should know that) Allah’s appointed time is about to come, and Allah hears everything and knows everything. Whoever will exert will exert for his own good. Allah is certainly Independent of all His creations. As for those who believe and do good works, We shall wipe off their evils and reward them for the best of their deeds. [Al-Ankabut 29:1-7]

Mysticism

In Islamic folklore, the appearance of Al-Khidr (Allah’s peace & blessings be upon him) is always significant to those who have been exposed to affirm the knowledge of certainty in the seen and the unseen. He is the initiator of this knowledge of those ready to receive it. The architect into the esoteric mysteries, known as an immortal guide, takes on the role of accompanying on a spiritual quest of the true seekers traversing on the path towards acknowledging Allah and his marvel, envisioning the higher realities which they observe & experience. It is believed by some that Sayyidina Khidr (Allah’s peace & blessings be upon him) is the guide by the necessity of all those who travel directly towards God without intermediaries. His way is mysterious but full of strange enlightenment and ascension to a different state of consciousness; all who he comes close to being secretly, invisibly, completely esoterically, transformed in their interior consciousness. His spiritual intervention takes place by making things appear to those in the physical realm as abnormal, but the true faith for the believer lies when sanity is tested by the juxtaposition of higher realities. In the case of Ahmad, his family members were tested to have trust in Allah’s decree & be patient with him. For Ahmad, it was a challenge to waver his faith a little and see if he too can show patience. However, Ahmad knew Allah put him on this test and He alone will be the one to get him to see it through. In his most vulnerable position at the hospital, Ahmad envisions the resting place of his beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), which made him believe with certainty that he was not alone and that he has become the praised one.

Prophethood is lifted at the demise of our beloved and final Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), but its knowledge remains. Therefore, some dreams can be considered similar to prophetic revelation in the truthfulness of its content or indication by righteous servants of Allah.

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) said: “When the end of time draws near, the dream of a believer can hardly be false, and the dream of a believer is one part from forty-six parts of prophethood.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

The path of a mystic is not solely dependent on the outward benefit of their supernatural wonder of Karamat (charismatic acts of miracles) by the permission of Allah or the inward knowledge of the Ghayb (unseen). Rather it is a path for the select few who must want it sincerely to not only attain the Ma’rifah (Conscious awareness) of Allah’s essence & attributes but to remain careful along their spiritual journeying towards Him, The Most-High, in complete submission to His command & the command of His final Messenger, Muhammad (Allah’s peace & blessings be upon him). The unveiling of the Divine sublimity occurs in the life of a believer for him or her to witness Allah’s Beauty and Majesty so they can increase the praise of their Lord and achieve nearness to Him, The Almighty.

Also, when it comes to mysticism, one cannot help but associate the concept of Sainthood with this selected group of people who have been granted Allah’s favor. The fact of the matter is that all the believing men & women who are true devotees of Allah, Glorious & Exalted is He, are guaranteed to be among those granted His favor Insha’Allah (God-willingly). That’s why it is most definitely a conception that is flawed and dangerous to attach to the tenants of Islamic theology. Moreover, it can lead the mass towards misguidance if not aligned with the book of Allah, the Holy Quran, and the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). Even the righteous among human beings are susceptible to making mistakes or sinning, but the best of them are those who return to their Lord seeking forgiveness through repentance.

“As for those who repent, believe, and do good deeds, they are the ones whose evil deeds Allah will change into good deeds. For Allah is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.” (Al-Furqan, 25:70)

Some of the Salaf (pious predecessors) used to say that it is not a big matter whether you love; the biggest matter is to be loved by Allah. If you are loved by Allah, then you are granted His mercy and blessings. You are going to be granted His support and guidance. If we choose Allah as our Wali (Protector) then Alhamdulillah (Praise be to Allah) know that He, The Almighty, is closer to us than our jugular veins and takes care of our affairs to the best of His, The All-Aware & The Wise, knowledge. Therefore, we must make sure that we only take Him (alone) as our Guardian and friend.

Articles of faith to acknowledge & believe in are the following:

1) Tawheed (Oneness of Allah)

Tawheed Al-Uloohiyyah [The unity of worship]: to worship Allah without associating any partners with Him and to avoid the worship of false gods & idols. There is no deity other than God alone worthy of worship.

Tawheed Al-Ruboobiyyah [Unity of Lordship]: He alone possesses the power to create and command and He, Lord of all the worlds, is the Creator, Master, Sustainer of all things, living & non-living, seen & the unseen.

Tawheed Al Asma Was-Sifaat is monotheism related to Allah’s names and attributes which requires complete acceptance and submission to the authentic texts of the Qur’an and the Sunnah (Prophetic teachings) that mention Allah’s lofty names and attributes. “Allah, there is no deity except Him. To Him belong the best names.” [Surah Ta’Ha: 8]

2) The Mala’ika (Angels) [Allah’s creation made from light, existing in the world of the unseen, who fulfills their assigned duties under His command]

3) Al-Lawh Al-Mahfuz (The Preserved Tablet) in which the destiny of the universe is set by Allah’s divine decree.

4) Allah’s books [Torah prescribed to Moses (peace be upon him), Psalm of David (peace be upon him), Gospel of Jesus (peace be upon him) & The Holy Quran that was revealed to His final prophet & messenger, Muhammad (peace be upon him)]

5) His Prophets & Messengers (Allah’s peace & blessings be upon them)

6) The day of judgment [scales set for the account of the deeds of the human beings & the Jinns (the creation of Allah made from smokeless fire living in the world of the unseen)]

7) The Hereafter (Afterlife of the eternal abode in the bliss of Paradise or the torment of Hellfire)

“Allah is the ally of those who believe. He brings them out from darkness into the light.” (Al-Baqarah, 2:257)

The Month of Ramadan; Symbolizing Revival of Faith (Eman), & Spiritual Excellence (Ihsan), in the religion of Islam.

The Month of Ramadan; Symbolizing Revival of Faith (Eman), & Spiritual Excellence (Ihsan), in the religion of Islam.

In contrast to the lockdown due to the pandemic, along with readying our mind & body for the vaccination against the deadly virus. There is much of the lessons to be derived for us to reflect upon as we welcome the blessed & beautiful month of Ramadan in which the holy book of Quran was reveled for guidance to humanity. The month in which God [The Exalted] revealed his revelations through Gabriel (peace be onto him) to Muhammad (May God blessings & peace be upon him). The month of fulfilling the ritual mode of worship & fasting of the body for the cleansing of the soul. Beginning of the spiritual purification through abstaining of the worldly desires of the self. The month of full conviction as believing men & women whose will are in submission to divine decree of God alone and have attested to His Prophets & messengers, His angels, origin of transmission of word of God in previous holy scriptures (i.e., Torah, Psalms of David & Gospel of Jesus before the integration of improvised contextualization containing the impurities of the human rationale), the last hour before the establishment of the day of accountability & His [The Exalted] judgment & the realities of the hereafter. A month of seclusion, yet of service to others through acts of giving charity of all forms for the sake of pleasing their Lord and attaining the rewards & many blessings in this temporal abode and from His [The Exalted] bounties of the hereafter. The month in which the Satan & his army of evil are chained & locked behind shut gates of hell. Whereas the door of mercy & heavens is extended to His [The Most-High] faithful servants. It is a month of solitary seclusion in which the believers pray, contemplate & reflect on the gift bestowed upon them in return of utmost reliance on God. Most of all, it is the month of attaining peace & tranquility within the hearts. In it one finds cure to their spiritual ails due to the blessings it contains for the believers completely surrendering his or her will to God (mo’min) and becoming from the sincere devotee (mukh’liseen). Indeed, the month of Ramadan is an antidote for the sickness of hearts due to the atmospheric influences and the natural disposition of this material world.

In a hadith [chain of narration of prophetic saying & tradition] reported by Abu Hurayra [one of the companions (God be pleased with them all) under the direct teaching at the time of the prophethood of Muhammad (peace be upon him); a prolific narrator and scholastic champion] collected by Imam An-Nasa’I in Al-Kubara #2421

The Prophet (May God blessings & peace be upon him) said:” When the month of Ramadan begins the doors of mercy are opened up, the doors of Hell are locked, and the devils are chained.”

Nobody can be flawless & remain free from sins. It is not humanly possible except for the prophets & messengers of God who He sent forth to humanity as a witness to revert all the devout to the Oneness of God alone & become exemplary in leading a path of righteousness for the followers of their nation which they had been sent to. Nonetheless, the guide for creation has been encrypted through the divine revelations prescribed onto humanity through forms of metaphysics, which is limited for human rationale to conceptualize. Yet, it can be perceived to arrive at the conclusion with conviction for the autonomy of living by the command and instruction to navigate the affairs of humanity in an appropriate ultimatum without the interruption of it with human perversion. In fact, in this material world, an inventor shall provide a manual guide for the common folks to adhere to the set of instructions to achieve the completion of his or her invention. Although, they must have had to learn the requisite skills to acquire and reach the level of expertise. Similarly, in the duration of these trial phases of scientific research & development of producing the vaccination to reach the mass in a reasonable timeframe could always leave room for human error due to our imperfection. Hence, there is The One & Only deity who is free & independent from all human defects. Beginningless & endlessness is from His [The Exalted] attribute & essence that allows us to perceive His [The Most Glorious] majestic and infinite qualities incomprehensive for human mind to capacitate due to its limitation. He is The Most Compassionate, The Most Merciful. He loves those who loves to show humility and ask Him [The All-Powerful] for all favors. He loves those who can humble themselves by showing gratitude, kindness & generosity towards the creation to gain His [The Almighty] mercy. God loves those who love to return to Him [The All-Forgiving] with repentance. He loves those who confide within themselves to forgive others to be able to seek His [The exalted] forgiveness. True salvation is independent of creation and attained only through His [The Most-High] mercy. The best among men & women are those who safeguard themselves from the impurities of life & are always in a state of repentance (returning) to their Lord; these are true believing men & women with God consciousness, who strive to rid themselves of the diseases of their heart under the influence of ego-self & initiate the purification of the soul through remembrance & obedience of God [The Most-High].

Now that everyone is preparing to get the covid vaccination from this empathic virus that has caused a prolonged worldwide pandemic with a devastating aftermath of adverse affects perpetuated on a micro & macro schemes of life. After year & a half later, there is a strange sense of awe to hear getting “needles in arms” for the vaccination to stabilize & continue to reverse the effects of this pandemic to go back to living our lives as we normally would. It almost seems paradoxical for mankind to have been in such a powerless state. Since the beginning of human history, man’s reliance upon his intellect has been self-serving his ego to claim proximity towards enlightenment & advancement reaching climax. Yet, we come to grasp onto the reality of helpless & vulnerability when faced with catastrophes such as this likeliness of this pandemic. Through centuries of the genius framework of minds in developing further technological advancement & exceling towards achievements through science for the betterment of humanity; it would have deemed appropriate for mankind to evaluate & learn from psychological traumas of the previous endemic to take preventative measures through innovative blueprints created by the experts in their relative field. Today, here we are still under scrutiny of trial & error. In defiance of the reality of metaphysics; the supernatural & the unseen in the grand spectrum. The heights of arrogance & the lack of accountability have reached its peak. We have failed to grasp the true understanding of our goal in humanity; to be in service to God by serving others. Subservience to the Creator & not the creation. There is no doubt that science has had a significance amount of impact over the course of history, but it has only made clear to humanity of the signs & wonders of God that is vast & infinite. From the mysteries of which only some is unveiled before humankind in this realm of the material world. Hence, the notion is to be apprehended from a holistic approach to give all the credit to the Ultimate Creator, The Producer & The Fashioner of all things created; living & non-living of that which is from the seen & the unseen. Everything in between the Heavens & the earth belongs to God alone. With all esteem held for modern-day science & its findings to provide safety through securing medical alternatives for the treatment of all the ails of human condition. Our incompetency shall remain regardless of the pedigree of many accomplishments of this world as to show humility towards The One & Only, The Determiner of all realities, The All-knowing, The Wise. Indeed, we are truly in need of God constantly & require complete dependency on Him [The Most-High] alone.

Under the examination of microbiology in health science, there has been a study of concerning factors with a definitive cause & effect of sickness in human body consisting of living microorganisms in our bodies which takes shape in a form of bacterial germs. And, sometimes depending on the external influences from the environment determines the effects that occurs internally endangering our health physically. Therefore, there is a natural alert response from antibodies as the alarming agents playing a vital counteractive role against components causing harm. Thus, medicine carrying elemental properties as the reagent substantial for recovering from any sickness relative the body. Truly, human body & its mechanism is from the wisdom of The Almighty [The Fashioner] who has created us from the earthly material carrying the matters of physics. Our framework is different from the rest of the creation. From the favors bestowed upon human beings which distinct us from other species is the mystical element. For God has breathed onto the souls His [The Producer] created spirit [light] that naturally resonates with humanity towards a higher power from which all source of goodness is inclined to. All praise & sovereignty belongs to Him [The Exalted] alone.

Anything not visible to the naked eye does not negate the certainty of the fact of the existence of microscopic living & non-living organisms unknown to mankind before the age of enlightenment & teleological advancement in the field of science. Thus, the realm of supernatural existence and the unseen is from the creation of God, which is most certainly not farfetched to pay heed to. Regardless, whether we believe or not, these are from the realities of existence that can be perceived to have been all along the course of origin of life and its elements on earth. However, God knows best, while we know not. He [The Exalted] does not require our rationale for having faith in Him. He is The Truth irrespective of using analogy to comprehend and reach the state of conviction of His religion. Surely it is us who are truly in need of Him [The Exalted], and not otherwise. Human psyche and behavioral science are linked to packet of energy carrying both positive & negative elements which emanates from their heart: the ground for ego, the self and conscience of the sons of Adam (God’s blessings & peace be upon him). The inward potentiality of the soul consisting of the mystery unlocked by those who are conscious of God. Hence, drawn to angelic & purity from the likes of attributes of God. However, natural disposition of mankind is to be tentative & heedless due to the distractions of this material world. Mostly, the lower self takes command driven by ego because of free will shared mutually by human beings and jinn’s (the supernatural being). On the contrary, Satan & his army of evil is the real enemy. Adamant on spreading mischief, deviance to lead mankind astray from their true purpose, and in committing transgression against themselves through manipulation and deception. The whispers of evil towards human beings, is like the notion of the thought process in human mind, beseeching the self ego to grapple with animalistic instincts. Slowly influencing spiritual laxity if not balanced by affirmation of the guidance needed for awakening the soul to counterbalance. For truly, this is attained through the remembrance of God and in submitting the will to divine decree eliminating ourselves from impurities by inclining to the fulfilling our true purpose in this temporal abode. An example of this, with a metaphorical analogy in relation to physics, would be of a photon carrying transverse wave through packets of energy in an electromagnetic field. Also, an atom consists of inner nuclei which contains nucleus (neutral) and protons (positively charged) surrounded by external component of outer shells bearing electrons (negatively charged). Verily, we belong to God and to Him do we return.

From one of the Hadith from Sahih Muslim [authentic book of the chain of narration of Prophetic saying & tradition],

Nu’man b. Bashir (Allah be pleased with him), One of the companions of the prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), reported:

I heard Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) as having said this (and Nu’man) pointed towards his ears with his fingers): What is lawful is evident and what is unlawful is evident, and in between them are the things doubtful which many people do not know. So, he who guards against doubtful things keeps his religion and honour blameless, and he who indulges in doubtful things indulges in fact in unlawful things, just as a shepherd who pastures his animals round a preserve will soon pasture them in it. Beware, every king has a preserve, and the things God his declared unlawful are His preserves. Beware, in the body there is a piece of flesh; if it is sound, the whole body is sound and if it is corrupt the whole body is corrupt, and hearken it is the heart.

The religion of God will remain perpetual. The DNA of humans are linked to common ancestry making us children of Adam (God’s peace & blessings be upon him). On a secular base, humanity functions on the values of ethical & unethical principles mutually inclusive to rest with all of mankind. However, humankind & jinn’s (supernatural beings) errs in the process of maintaining the correctness of being compliant through the methods of keeping sincerity in faith. Victimized by the evils which leads to transgression against themselves with recurrence of vandalizing & negating the faultiness of their traits. As the phrase goes, by John Dalberg-Acton, a British historian & politician:

“Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely…”

Such is the case mostly prompted in the position of authority due to greed, gluttony, boastfulness, envy, pride, arrogance & self-entitlement. These elements are from the innate disposition of human corporeality. In a commotion of mechanical state of living tendencies with untamed egos, the human heart is the driving force of enlivening its spiritual state for keeping in check with the self. However, the reality is that human beings had always failed to preserve the consciousness of God & the set of religious laws for humanity binding with the divinity. This was truly ever successfully established as a force of religious establishment, along with relative to the secular aspect, carrying its populous significance in the philosophy of political science recognized by human beings over 1400+ years ago through the seal of all prophets: the last appointed messenger of God on this earth, Muhammad (May God’s peace & blessing be unto them), sent as the mercy towards all creation perfecting of God’s [The Exalted] religion (Islam). Assimilating as the complete holistic reform in constructing of the just & peaceful socio-politico economic system for humanity. Next to, bringing the entire population around the world under the umbrella of true monotheism. As well as the formation of harmonious union between the creation and The Creator in binding with The Quran [noninterchangeable word of God] remaining intact as a proof to all mankind. This is from the miracles of our beloved prophet, the seal of prophethood & messengership (May God blessings & peace be unto all of them). However, the task for the Muslims is to keep themselves on this path to true success and affirm steadfastness towards righteousness. And, allow the continuation of spreading this beautiful way of life towards goodness by welcoming others in humanity with open invitation to accepting the faith (Islam). This can truly be accomplished by starting with us reverting back to with the tenants of faith, Quran and the Sunnah [living example from the life of our prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)], and cling on to it. Take lessons for motivation and inspiration by the fine representative (True ambassadors of Islam & righteous predecessors), throughout history, who accompanied in pioneering integral methods of implementing social justice and peace encompassing micro (personal embodiment) and macro (social advocate) level.

Secrets on Calling to God [Alone] & Knowing He Listens to Our Prayers.

Secrets on Calling to God [Alone] & Knowing He Listens to Our Prayers.

In Islamic tradition, there is the importance given to the ‘Qadr’ [Preordainment] of Allah (God). As Muslims, it is remarked onto the believers to have ‘tawakkul’ [trust in God’s (The Almighty) plan over ours] as we pursue this life. Thus, it’s important to understand that the will of God [The All-Powerful] is above all which he or she should practice submitting to through the course of this journey of life. Though, efforts we make are from our own free will. Yet for the believers, it’s made for the sake of God as He [Most Benevolent] is our Ultimate Guardian and Sustainer overall for everything (Health, Relationships, Wealth, Etc.) life has to offer. Truth is that our motive in life is never permanent. In fact, for a believer, life is a station which is not everlasting. A simple way to achieve a mindset that can uplift an individual to be mindful, during a time of calamity that befalls them, is by thinking of this life as a temporary abode. Hence, any sort of pain or disease an individual suffers from is temporary as well, and a reminder that we are only human; a vulnerable & fragile creation bound to stay dependent on Allah [The Majestic]. Even in prosperity, the importance of being in a state of humility is emphasized as the blessings from God are countless. And, so why is it that we do not rush towards our Maker asking for the cure to all our problems or even making this abode pleasantry for us in this life along with the hereafter also? It’s narrated in the ‘Sahih Hadith’ [Authentic Prophetic Sayings & Tradition] according to Bukhari & Muslim that Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) said: He [The Exalted] has not sent down a disease except that He has also sent down its cure. The sad reality is that most of us are self-sufficient, especially now more than ever as the world accelerates towards materialism extensively. It feels good taking credit for all the hard work and success that is attained over the time span. So, the remembrance of God becomes the least of the priority. We become forgetful of the fact that it is Allah (God), who decides for his servants of the blessings or trials & tribulation which bestows upon them as a test of their faith in Him [The Most Magnificent]. Surely, whoever is God-conscious and recognizes Him [The All-Observant] during every moment of their life will see His grace upon them in all their matters. Indeed, the state of gratitude is the key to achieve the contentment of the heart and troubled mind.

The Perfect Formula

In the name of Allah (God); He is All-Knowing & All-Giving. Praise be to His Glory: He is Al-Basir [All-Seeing], Al-Khabir [All-Aware] & Al-Mujib [The Answerer of All Prayers]. Indeed, we are forever dependant on Allah [Alone]. It is in our own best interest that we keep conscious of Him on a regular basis along within our prayers as if He could see us, even though, we cannot. By doing so, we acquire ‘Taqwa’ [Consciousness of God] and abstain from any form of evil and rejoice in that which is good. All our needs and wants are fulfilled due to God’s will [The Determiner]. Subhan’Allah [Glory be to Allah], the depth of ones’ heart is of clarity and known to Him [The Exalted] better than the individuals themselves. The figure below depicts elements of understanding that a believer should be in pursuit of, which are the following:

Untitled (2)

Figure 1: Key Elements That Every Muslim Should Align Themselves with While Practicing Their Faith.

Untitled (3)

Figure 2: Interconnectedness of These Elements as the Core of Having Right Foundation of a Belief System for the Believers.

Never underestimate the power of Dua’ (supplication). Each time a servant of God has his or her hands raised towards their Master; there should be no doubt that it’s not being accepted. God’s always listening & giving in various forms of blessings that we take for granted most of the time. Allah (God) fulfills His promise to us one way or another; in this ‘Dunya’ (world) and-or the ‘Akhira’ (Hereafter). Thus, there is a glad tiding for those who are from the ‘Sabiroon’ (Patient Ones). Indeed, God never lets down those who run towards him needlingly asking for His [The Most Merciful] favors. Under any given circumstances, it’s essential that we stay reliant on God. One of the positive signs from the mercy of Allah (God) is that of those whom He [The Exalted] has placed contentment in their hearts. And when any hardship comes across their way, they aren’t phased by it because their heart is at ease knowing God is their Caretaker. Moreover, they have attained the state of ‘Shukr’ (having gratitude) by being content with whatever Allah (God) has in store for them. Thus, it’s a smooth sailing under any storm that an individual may have to weather; that itself is evidently a blessing from God.

Untitled 1 (2)

Figure 3: The Correct Formula Towards Attaining God’s Blessings.

Once these elements have seeped within the mind of a believer, the outcome of it will present itself outwardly in their actions as much as the depth of it is absorbed within the heart. Therefore, it’s a matter of remaining consistent with the remembrance of God as a means for the purification of the soul. When that is accomplished; the rest is left for the resolution from The One & Only up above all skies, where the ultimate decisions are taken place according to the Divine Wisdom.

Evident Cases on Receiving from The Most Benevolent

In the book of ‘Al-Musnad by Imam Ahmad Ibn Hanbal, one of giant scholars of Islam, there are numerous chain narrations of ‘Hadiths’ [Prophetic Sayings, Tradition & Practices] that were transmitted along the generations [among the student of knowledge & learned scholars of Islamic theology] since the time of the life of Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H). In it he narrates that, Usamah Ibn Shuraik, one of the companions (May God’s blessing be upon them) of the Prophet said:

“I was with Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) when the Bedouins came to him and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, should we seek medicine? He said, ‘Yes, O slaves of Allah, seek medicine, for Allah has not Created a disease except that He Has Created its cure, except for one illness.’ They said. ‘And what is that?’ He said, Old age”.

We are all prone to some sort of ailment at any point in our lives, and there is the medical treatment for it as prescribed by the healthcare practitioner who we go to check up within hopes for aiding the sickness or any physical pain that our body may suffer from. As we grow older, more signs of weakness are likely to occur due to the natural order of the cycle of life. Yet, the body functions according to the will and the mindset that each individual carries along within themselves. There have been cases of individuals who set ideals for themselves with having a strong mentality of mind over matter, and as a result, it shows extrinsically of their will to keep carrying on doing what they desire. Now, of course, this is easier said than done. The fact of the matter is that our body, as we grow old, naturally goes into the state of wanting to not proceed and exceed its limits. It wouldn’t be possible for the body mechanism to push more than it can as it weakens periodically, especially if it hasn’t been active consistently over the years. Also, there are many factors that can be elaborated on keeping a human body physically sustainable and healthy over a lifetime. Believe it or not, it all ties to what we consume and abstain from mentally, physically and of course spiritually. The ability to overcome all the negative commotion in life and staying positive throughout every step taken forward regardless of the challenges that arise along the way. In other words, it comes down to having patience and goodwill which is a process that initiates internally by allowing our minds to have good thoughts. Therefore, just as we would put our trust in medicine as the cure to any illness, it’s relatively as important, if anything more potent to have faith in God [The Most High]. He [the Exalted] is in control of all that is in the Heavens and the Earth; everything that is from the known and unknown to Mankind. Indeed, God [The Producer] is our Creator. He is our Master [The Almighty] who bequeath upon his creation accordingly.

Actual Scenario: Case One

Not too long ago, there was a gratifying sermon that an Imam [Religious leader; Community figure who leads Congregational prayers at a Mosque] gave during ‘Jumu’ah’ [Friday prayer] over the concept of having ‘Yaqeen’ [Certainty]. He unfolds the story of a man with an unusual case of illness that required immediate attention towards his severe mental health disorder, and how he was gradually recovered over time by the grace of God’s will. He was told to keep the privacy of the narrative by the family member who reached out to him personally at some point. This family had been going through a crisis and was overwhelmed by the fact that an individual among them was suffering from a strange case of illness that he was diagnosed with over the years. This individual had the earliest symptoms of maniac depression that later transformed into schizophrenia. Anybody that knows someone, directly or indirectly, who suffers from a mental health disorder knows the fact that it’s not easy being in the environment as it can be toxic. The Imam elaborates that everyone in the family had been affected by this tragedy in some way changing their outlook in life. They tried everything they could think of for the treatment by making appointments with few psychiatrists. They had this individual under different methods which varied from therapy sessions to notching the dosage of medications that were prescribed for the condition. However, their position seemed hopeless as the situation only kept getting worse. Also, this is a Muslim family who is well rounded in practicing their faith. They tried to go to a ‘Hakeem’ (A practitioner of herbal medicine) who is spiritually inclined and understand the realm of the human psyche beyond the technicality of the perception of modern science. The matter didn’t seem to get better for them until one of the members of their family, who actively tried to remain calm under pressure and always reminded everyone else to do the same as well for the sake of attaining God’s mercy. Eventually, the family realized that this is a matter deeper than what it seems. Allah (God) has always made those, who He loves most, go through severe tests to strengthen their faith. So, this individual’s brother didn’t lose hope and had been keenly fulfilling his duty as a Muslim. He increased his faith by remembering his Master more frequently; attending the local mosque for his own sake to remain steadfast on his ‘Deen’ [Way of life in Islam]. He held the rope of Allah (God) tightly and made sure everyone’s grip had been tightened as well. Slowly but surely, he witnesses the condition of his brother getting better along with the environment in the household becoming calmer. Indeed, Allah (God) is with the patient ones. He [The Exalted] accepts the prayers from his servants and grants them a remedy to all their problems.

Significance of Implementing ‘Istikhara’ [Prayer]

Many of the practicing Muslims consider this as a prayer specially made during the time of needing guidance over an issue; especially if it’s towards making major decisions in life. This is slowly starting to become a lost ‘Sunnah’ [Methodology] of Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) since most of us are hasty in making our decisions in accordance with fulfilling our desire out of selfishness. Before performing ‘Istikhara’, the individual needs to be sincere with their intentions. Once that is attained along with making Dua’ [supplication], specifically for ‘Istikhara’ prayer. Eventually, a positive or negative sign is indicated to the believer, either through a dream or in physicality, as he or she set along their course. In simpler terms, things are made smooth or difficult to them by the will of God [The All-Aware] for their own best interest.

According to Islamic belief, dreams are of three types: the subconscious, from the evils of ‘Shaitan’ (Satan), or from the will of Allah (God). Mostly, dreams occur due to our subconsciousness. Anything that we have thoughts about in our daily lives, which we secretly desire, can occur in the form of our dreams usually. However, a sign of a dream from the evils of ‘Shaitan’ (Satan) takes shape in a nightmare mostly. These dreams most of the time are unsettling when an individual wakes up from it causing them to feel anxious. Lastly, in unusual cases, dreams may come to an individual in the form of good signs. However, these dreams are common among the men of virtue and piety. They may wake up from it feeling hopeful about a situation or the aspect of their dream can take form physically.

Case Two

There was this man who excelled at attaining piety through the course of years from adolescence into adulthood. Due to reoccurring complications, there had always been barriers that would come between him or any set goals regardless of the efforts made towards achieving it. Nonetheless, he remained consistent throughout the years while struggling in many attempts made to attain worldly possession, along with his tremendous effort to exceed in his faith. His transformation into adulthood was as a man of wisdom through all the circumstances he had been in, and learned from it, as he grew older. Upon pursuing a career in the field of study after some time; he was on the road more frequently, and glad to have gained some financial stability after all. Until he realized that it had compromised his ability to remain steadfast towards the ‘Deen’ [Way of living in accordance with Islam]. And, so he let go of his job hoping to find work-life balance and staying close to his family. Moreover, he felt the pressure from his surroundings (Family & Peers) to have been settled by now and get married. Due to his modesty, this man never allowed himself to become close friends with the opposite sex. He kept the interactions as minimal as possible because he understood very young of the temptations that can overtake physically, even though he was good looking himself. And, to protect and safeguard one’s faith is a characteristic of being pious indeed. Now before this man had quit his job; he got involved with someone who was interested in him, and likewise, this individual sought this as means of wanting to pursue her as a potential spouse. However, it became a matter of confusion for him as he didn’t have financial stability. Prior to when this began, he set his intentions clear by performing an ‘Istikhara’ prayer. Seeking guidance from Allah (God) on the matter of his financial means & right direction towards building a relationship according to their own best interest. Within a brief time, they both dispersed by being occupied in their own lives. He made a friend through volunteering at the local mosque who had just moved a block down where he lived. Coincidently, this friend offered him a ride to come to pray Jumu’ah [Friday Prayer] one day. Surprisingly, the friend was accompanied by his sister, who this man had been classmates with during his college years. At some point during those years, he dreamt of them being married to each other. However, it only remained a temporary desire because he realized it its nothing but a mere distraction. After this incident, he acknowledged this as a potential sign from Allah (God) because it hadn’t been the first time that he’d dreamt of something that had come slightly true in actuality. This really boosted his faith to another level as he discovers his need of wanting to utilize his time seeking pleasure in God’s remembrance and develop a deeper understanding of the religion (Islam). Over the course of his lifetime, this man ends up becoming the Imam [Religious Leader] and a teacher at his local Mosque as he builds his life on the foundation of having patience and sacrifices made throughout the years. Above all, he ends up marrying the woman of his dream (literally), Subhan’Allah [Glory be to Allah].

In ‘The Book of Assistance’, by Imam Abdallah Ibn’Alawai Al-Haddad, one of the pious predecessors from the lineage of the Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H). It beautifully mentions the perception of having a consciousness of Allah (God):

Fear & Hope should be in equilibrium, just like the wings of a bird. ‘Should the fear of a believer and his hope be weighed, they should be found equal’. This is the state of most believers. ‘Despair’ is to be so overwhelmed by fear as to leave absolutely no room for hope, while ‘security’ is to have so much hope as to leave absolutely no room for fear. The man who has either of the two is ignorant of God and will inevitably neglect His obedience and transgress. For the one who despairs forsakes obedience because he feels it will be on no avail to him, while the one who is secure commits sins thinking that they will not harm him. We seek God’s protection against damnation and against evil destiny.

So then, how do we become more prevalent in the aspect of wanting to seek the pleasures of the life after this as well? The life that is eternal, and really is attained by sowing the seeds of it in the present one. Truly, we are at a great loss if the hereafter is compromised even the slightest due to the rigorous desire of the attainment of this life which is nothing in comparison to the one that awaits after this temporary abode.

Safeguarding One’s Faith

Among all the creations of Allah (God), human beings and ‘Jinns’ [Supernatural: that which is from the unseen world] are given free will. There is both, good and evil, amongst the existence between the paranormal and the physicality of this world. Indeed, God [The Almighty] is The Most Sovereign, who has the absolute knowledge of detail in depth of all worlds [Everything in it & beyond]. It should be a matter clear to a believer to have awareness of the realm of a force that is harmful and dangerous to our environment. Man’s biggest enemy is ‘Shaitan’ [Satan]; he has declared and taken upon himself the challenge to deviate humanity towards evil (self-destruction). ‘Iblees’ (The Devil) has taken a pledge by Allah (God) to make mankind go astray, by any means necessary, since the beginning of time till the last hour [The Day of Judgment]. Therefore, it’s relevantly a matter of utmost significance that the believing men and women protect themselves. Ultimately, that is achieved through having a strong faith and choosing to keep it safeguard by the remembrance of Allah (God). It’s essential to align our mindset; stay in connection with our spiritual identity through the guidance of True Knowledge and implicate it in our actions for our own sake. Much like cause & effect, the perception of life is according to our ‘Nafs’ [Human Psyche]. An appropriate balance is needed to stay rooted to remain firm in this life, and reach the eternal destination seeking the bounties of God [The Most Merciful], Insha’Allah [God willingly]. Just as loving the world is the origin of all sins, so also is hating it the origin of all obedience and excellence. It is enough to make you renounce the world to know that in numerous passages in the Holy Book of Quran [The Direct Speech from God] has called it the comfort of illusion. And, God [The Exalted] defined the world as being but a distraction and play to which no intelligent person should pay any attention and to which only ignorant fools are attracted. To be a fool is being among those who are drenched and consumed by this life that is but an illusion per se. In conclusion, there’s a saying by a certain gnostic that said: ‘My desire is that I should not desire, so that I may abandon that which I do not desire, and thus not be deprived of that which I desire.’ This ties well with an understanding of the believers who consistently work on not attaching their heart with the pleasures of this world, but merely have a grasp of it. Indeed, the best [among the righteous] are those who serve their Lord [The Creator] through good actions and preserve their faith with the remembrance of God.

Relevant Truth which Denotes Divine Sacredness to Mankind

Irrespective of the differences in the Abrahamic religions [Monotheistic Faith]; it can be agreed upon the fundamental aspect throughout history that science is of God’s wonders. Making it evidently clear through the holy scriptures of the past that knowledge was bestowed upon Adam (peace be upon him); the sprout of mankind. Science may define theocratic discoveries with proofs and evidence as to the natural order in all things of existence derived through an analytical perception and the comprehension of this universe. Therefore, adapting to evolution as an augmented reality which is partially false and derogatory as our standard in humanity. However, a grand scheme of existence is a question of having a belief system beyond human logic, which we commonly resolute to, and that is faith. Truth is; our mind cannot fathom the omnipotence of the Supreme & Almighty. Indeed, we are among God’s creation. Producer of the seen [physical] & unseen [metaphysical]. He has made us with the similar elements & properties of the planet Earth. The origin of mankind is indicated in the Holy Book of Qur’an;

“Indeed! We have created man from an extract of clay, Then placed him as the sperm-drop into a clinging clot, and We made the clot into a lump [of flesh], and We made [from] the lump, bones, and We covered the bones with flesh; then We developed him into another creation. So blessed is Allah, the best of creators.” [Qur’an; 23:12-14]

There was a famous Arab historian during the mid-1300s, about five hundred years before the existence of the Darwinian theory. His name is Ibn Khaldun, born in Tunisia; great repute among the classics of the pioneers during the Medieval Era. Also, he was considered one of the greatest philosophers in the middle ages. He states in his book, “The Muqaddimah: An introduction to History”; [1]

“Man’s ability to think comes to him (only) after the animality in him has reached perfection. It starts from discernment. Before man has discernment, he has no knowledge whatsoever and is counted one of the animals still determines his (mental make-up). Whatever he attains subsequently is the result of sensual perception and the “hearts” – that is, the ability to think – God has given him. In recounting the favor He bestowed upon us, God said: (And God has extracted you from the wombs of your mothers not knowing a thing, and He made for you hearing and vision and intellect that perhaps you would be grateful).”  [Qur’an; 16:78]

It’s incredibly mindboggling to examine the aesthetic & mechanics that the human body is capable of enacting to keep itself sustained. The beauty of communication between our brain and the heart. Impossible for it to exist without having a Master who is of perfection; The Ultimate Fashioner. One who made animals subservient among mankind. The One who gave human beings and the ‘jinns’ [supernatural in the unseen world] free will, unlike angels who forever are in a state of prostration and submission to their Creator: One & Only.

There is no denying the fact that we are social beings, and that’s definite. In a way, it can be derived that humans are quite animalistic in function. The basic similarities among them are; Food, Shelter & Intimacy. However, which trait allows us to be unique in comparison with animals? It’s our capacity to think and conceptualize that makes us transcend to the stature of raising a level further. Ibn Khaldun mentions;

“On man’s ability to think, which distinguishes human beings from animals and which enables them to obtain their livelihood, to co-operate to this end with their fellow men, and to study the Master whom they worship, and the revelations that the Messengers transmitted from Him. God thus caused all animals to obey man and to be in the grasp of his power. Through his ability to think, God gave man superiority over many of His creatures.” [1]

Therefore, how does mankind differentiate from the rest of the species? The human behavior is not of the quality of an animal, although both species share having an emotional sensibility. However, our actions are generally made through cognitive ability. Ibn Khaldun elaborates on this notion furthermore; [1]

“Man’s ability to think produces the sciences and the afore-mentioned crafts. In connection with the ability to obtain the requirements of nature, which is engrained in man as well as, indeed, in animals, his ability to think desires to obtain perceptions that it does not yet possess. Man, therefore, has recourse to those who preceded him in science, or had more knowledge or perception than he, or learned a particular science from earlier prophets who transmitted information about it to those whom they met. He takes over such things from them and is eager to learn and know them.

His ability to think and to speculate, then, directs itself to one of the realities. He speculates about every one of the accidents that attach themselves to the essence of (that reality). He persists in doing so until it becomes a habit of his, always to combine all its accidents with a given reality. So, his knowledge of the accidents occurring in connection with a particular reality becomes a specialized knowledge. Members of the next generation desire to obtain that knowledge. Therefore, they repair to the people who know about it. This is the origin of instruction. It has thus become clear that science and instruction are natural to human beings.

And God knows better.”

Thus, being able to think and have intellect is a gift endured upon humanity that we fail to comprehend or neglect because of our innate desire. Whether one believes in it or not; the true seekers of knowledge will witness the signs among themselves, which should draw them closer towards embracing the truth rather than transgressing due to their selfishness. Of course, except for those who are curious. For curiosity leads towards the origin. And that creates a deep realization of an entity which is incomprehensible, yet of clarity in all realms before the naked eye as miraculous evidence of an indication towards divinity: The Producer of this universe. Everything in it & beyond; who becomes a manifestation in us as the divine wisdom.

As a thinker, and as well as a practicing Muslim, the significance of interpreting that which is believed to be true according to the science of human body, nature included, is almost superimposable with some of the narrations of authentic ‘Hadiths’ [methodology and embodiment] of our Prophet, and Islamic theology which chains back to the time of Muhammad (peace be upon him): The last Messenger of God, seal of the Prophethood to mankind, and mercy to this world in Humanity. For a rational monotheist; it impossible for the entirety of the oneness to be a dependable variable that sets to our ideals. God remains independently eminent; a constant that has no beginning or an end. Therefore, a consciousness of God is crucial to preserving singularity of that which remains pure. Hence, we learn that Prophets and Messengers came [to mankind] among us, as a sign from the sublime, to instruct their people towards guidance and preserve the sacred truth.

In the Pre-Islamic era, a common culture known to the Bedouins was tribalism [equivalent to Nationalism in a modern world]. Arabs were not accustomed to being sedentary in their way of living. They were a paganistic [Idolater] society who did worship a deity known to them as ‘ilah’ [God], but associate partners (i.e. elat, al-uzza & manat). According to the descriptive life [seerah] of Muhammad (P.B.U.H); he was born in a tribe called ‘Banu Hashim’ during 570 CE. His lineage ties back to an ‘Adnani’ tribe that links, Prophet Ismail [Ishmael]; son of Ibrahim [Abraham] (peace be upon them), as their descendant. The concept of monotheism derives from Abraham, who was chosen to be the ‘Ummah’ [leader] of his nation by God. Regardless of the environment that he (P.B.U.H) was encircled by; his faith was steadfast in purity and he remained truthful, on the path of righteousness, by discarding to ascribe himself of any impurities which would displease his ‘Rabb’ [God].

HeartFigure 1: Wisdom in the willingness of the heart of a believer according to Islam

Rollin McCarty, Ph.D. Executive Vice President and Director of Research at the Institute of Heartmath (IHM) along with his team discovered a relatively new field of neurocardiology. In this study, they have firmly established that the heart is a sensory organ and an information encoding and processing center, with an extensive intrinsic nervous system that’s sufficiently sophisticated to qualify as a heart-brain. Its circuitry enables it to learn, remember, and make functional decisions independent of the cranial brain. To everyone’s surprise, the findings have demonstrated that the heart’s intrinsic nervous system is a complex, self-organized system; its neuroplasticity, or ability to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections over both the short and long term, has been well demonstrated. [4]

The diagram above depicts a figurative meaning enlightening the essential framework that sets apart a believer from those who don’t believe due to ignorance (heedlessness) and transgression (violate). The heart is made fragile, yet it contains the intelligence of its own. Therefore, it’s a necessity to have an inclusive or coherent state of mind which leads towards making healthy decisions for our own sake. Essentially, it narrows down to having self-awareness. The significance of making choices which allows us to make room for growth. And, that’s attainable through self-discipline and control solely for the purpose of developing healthy habits. Otherwise, one can give in to their desires which could eventually lead to having a detrimental effect on Mind, Body & Soul if its not taken care of accordingly. Our tendency is leaned towards having a temperament of comfort. So, we generally don’t take heed on probing for the sake of acquiring definite actions. Hearts are usually swayed upon senses which are receptive to the human body. Therefore, to love without recognition would be considered for one to be ignorant. This can be projected on to a scenario of someone that takes their diet in their account for the sake of their health, whereas to the one who doesn’t at all. On average, we all prefer to eat specifically for what we desire. Someone who is aware of beneficial aspects of the nutrition, which the human body needs to stay healthy, would take precaution as a necessity. Thus, having recognition gives more meaning to the subjectivity of that which we pursue. So, an individual will see it as a process of taking measures to keep their body sustained intrinsically and extrinsically. In this case, one who isn’t aware or haven’t acknowledged themselves of food science, it’s health effect to the body, will continue deciding based on the desire of wanting to eat whatever they please without regulating. Let’s consider the same example to reflect on one’s ability to transgress. If the person acknowledges that which they have a comprehensive understanding of, yet still follows the desire of wanting to keep eating food without maintaining a balanced diet or taking measures overall; the continuity to eat whatever they please knowing that it could be the reason for chronic health issues would be considered as an act of transgression [upon themselves].

Trust [Ama’nah] & Faith [Iman]

The Heart is Central [3]

The Messenger (P.B.U.H) said: “Halal (pure) is clear and haram (impure) is clear, and between the two are ambiguous matter that many people do not know their rulings. So, whoever avoids the ambiguous matter will safeguard his religion and reputation. And the one who falls into them falls in the haram, like the shepherd who grazes around the sanctuary and is about to cross into it. Indeed, every king has a sanctuary and the sanctuary of Allah (God) is His prohibitions. And in the body, there is a morsel of meat that if it is well, the rest of the body will be well; and if it is corrupt, then the rest of the body will be corrupt. It is the heart.”  [Reported by al-Bukhari (52) & Muslim (1599)]

The importance of ‘amanah’ is applicable through means which is tangible or intangible. It is referred to as ensuring trust in the matters of giving and receiving. For example, if a person tells another individual that [something personal usually] which is meant to remain between themselves. This would be considered as an ‘amanah’, unless it seems threatening or would cause harm to anybody physically and emotionally. Borrowing is another great example of an ‘amanah’. As a Muslim, it is our duty to be rightful in action. Generally, it’s out of love (staying in obedience to God) and staying away from doing anything that displeases Him and goes against the commandments. Also, in loving someone for the sake of God (Allah) is an ‘amanah’. Think about it; building any sort of relationship starts with the foundation of having trust. Therefore, a Muslim always honors an individual by preserving a relation beautifully because of his or her obedience to God and spread love, compassion, kindness for His sake among their family, peers and even strangers. To know God and be self-aware is really the purpose of being a Muslim. He or she recognizes that life, as mesmerizing as it is; is a temporary abode. Thus, his aim is to fulfill his purpose and seek the eternal pleasure of God’s bounty that is far more extravagant than the pleasures of this life. Indeed, to God we belong and to Him shall we return. Therefore, the body for a Muslim is a liability that needs to be taken care of as deserving of it in accordance with instructions from God [Most Benevolent]. Indeed, the body is an ‘amanah’ from God (Allah).

One of the companions of the Prophet (P.B.U.H), Abu Hurayrah (May God be pleased with him), said; “The heart is the king and the limbs are its soldiers. So, if the king is good, his soldiers will be good. And if he is evil, his soldiers will be evil.[Reported by al-bayhaqi in Shu’ab al-Iman (108)]

In obedience is our salvation, which leads towards having an inner state of acceptance [submitting to God] for our own sake. It is mandatory for a Muslim to live in servitude of his Master; that is God (Allah) alone. Therefore, submitting to His will over our own, and in doing so, is truly gratifying and honorable for a Muslim. God [The Exalted] has provided us with uncountable blessings that no amount of worship could ever do justice by Him [The Magnificent]. Still, we are in gratitude during all time, good or bad. Our actions are made in service to God for the sake of our livelihood. A Muslim is an optimist who never loses hope and continues to follow in the footsteps of their teacher Muhammad (PBUH); a leader who set a great example in all aspects of life during his time among the people, and generations after to come and follow his message as the rightly guided under the religion of Islam.

Concept of Faith [Iman] in Islam

The Heart is Volatile; [3]

The Messenger (P.B.U.H) said: “The qalb (heart) was given this name only because of its fluctuations. The heart is like a feather in the wilderness – at a base of a tree – that continues to be turned on its head by the wind. [Reported by Ahmad (196610 and al-Tabarani. Al-Iraqi declared it ‘hasan’, and al-Albani declared it ‘sahih’ (Sahih al-Jami’, 2365)]

Life is never stagnant; it’s in motion of different possibilities that we experience daily. Although we make choices every day and plan things accordingly; God is ultimately the best of Planner and wills upon his servants which one could perhaps consider as fate or destiny. For sure there are different stages, highs & the lows, that every individual goes through in life. It is in His divinity (divine will) that the events take a turn in the world that we live in. All the phases of emotion and the moments experienced by any individual are due to His wisdom which directs them accordingly; Allah (God) guides whomever he’s pleased with and leaves those who go astray unless they repent. Indeed, He [The Most Merciful & Forgiving] loves those who repent with sincerity. Hence, a Muslim is aware of the reality of life and in his aim to fulfill the purpose of living a decent life. Their approach to life is optimistic as he or she remains content [in gratitude] through hardships and stays in humility during pleasant moments which life has to offer. And, that is attained by having ‘Iman’ [faith]. It’s key to maintain the hearts of the believers thriving in God’s remembrance.

In another hadith, the Prophet paints for us another poignant portrait of the nature of our hearts. He (P.B.U.H) said: “The heart of the child of Adam is more volatile and quicker to change than the completely boiling pot.” [Reported by Ahmad (23816) and declared ‘sahih’ by al-Albani (al-Silsilah al-Sahihah, 1772)]

The heart is bound to be influenced due to the nature of our environment that we assimilate into our daily lives. Although, there are social and cultural identities that play a significant role to define us. A Muslim is always willing to stay true to preserve their spiritual identity, which is prioritized most by them, through practicing their faith. The fluctuation of ‘Iman’ is natural due to the reality of this life, but they [Muslims] know the practicality of faith is just as important to remain obedient to God for their own sake. Also, it’s understood to a Muslim that as human beings; they can’t be sinless & be perfect. On the contrary, it’s very easy to fall into sin, but the importance of sincere repentance is what reflects the ‘Iman’ of a believer. And, striving to mend their relationship with God (Allah) is in the best of their interest above all.

Acknowledging Oneness of the sublime & adapting the state of devotion for the sake of liberating ourselves.

The Perfection of Religion in Humanity

Before prophethood; Muhammad (P.B.U.H) grew up having a role as a shepherd, and later, as a trader on behalf of people in Mecca. He would take their caravans in different regions around the Arabian Peninsula. Muhammad (P.B.U.H) was modest and simplistic in nature. They called him a treasurer [al-Ameen], a title assigned to him by the people, because of his trustworthiness in his dealings. This really speaks for itself, since it requires an adequate amount of having trust among individuals. He was well known to have fairness in the affairs among the people of all tribes and standing against injustice in Mecca. Furthermore, it’s discovered through the descriptive life [seerah] of the Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) that he wasn’t accustomed to idolatry. Instead, he was a man who would often contemplate through solitary here and there by means of reflecting in nature.

In fact, the first revelation that came down on him through Jibraeel [Gabriel] was during a moment of solitary. Prophet Muhammad was in solitude in the cave on Mount Hira, Mecca.  He was startled by the Angel of Revelation, Gabriel, the same who had come to Mariam [Mary], the mother of Isa [Jesus] (Peace be upon them), who seized him in a close embrace.  A single word of command burst upon to him: ‘Iqra’ – ‘Read!’  He said: ‘I am not able to read!’ but the command was issued twice more, each with the same response from the Prophet.  Finally, he was grasped with overwhelming force by the angel.  Gabriel released him, and the first ‘recitation’ of the Quran was revealed to him: [5]

Read in the name of your Lord who created -created man from a clot. Read: for your Lord is Most Bountiful, who teaches by the pen, teaches man that which he knew not.” [Quran; 96:1-5]

Upon receiving this revelation at the age of forty, Muhammad (P.B.U.H) was petrified and confused as he rushed back to his wife Khadijah. She was the very first woman to believe in him and affirm his prophethood. She took him to a distant relative who was a Hanif [Original Monotheist], Waraqah ibn Nufi; a pious and wise man of old age. He knew about the book of Torat [Torah], Injil [Gospels of Jesus] and Jesus (P.B.U.H) mentioning of the coming apostle to him. After their meeting, he declares Muhammad (P.B.U.H) of having the sign of Prophethood and alerts him about his people rejecting him as done onto the Messengers before.

Nonetheless, the beauty of the message flourished within his lifetime, and after his (P.B.U.H) passing. Aside from the differences [Ikhtilaf] within the nation [Ummah] of Islam; the growing population increased to be the second-largest faith in humanity that is going to continue to prosper until the day of judgment Insha’Allah [if God wills]. Also, it’s the only faith that accepts all the previous holy books [Torah, the Bible [Old Testament] & Psalm of David (peace be upon him)] from Abrahamic Religions, but believes in Qur’an [Direct Speech from God; Noninterchangeable] as an ultimate guidance [a miracle] in humanity as it was perfected to be the true religion of God (Allah). Therefore, the significance of attaining knowledge is a clear indication of being a Muslim and acknowledging it is essentially the key to the reality of having a blissful abode in this life and the hereafter.

Spirituality: A global phenomenon

Today, the common phrase generalized in society is of the term known as “law of attraction”. The notion is given to the idea of ‘universe’ working in favor of individuals who embrace ‘karma’ as their fundamental belief system. After acknowledging the actuality of the truth; however, it can all seem flawed due to the foundation of it based upon one’s cognitive thinking and not from that which is pure [i.e. The Qur’an (direct speech of God)].

Science has remained ongoingly intrigued by discovering unhidden realms of metaphysics. Spiritualists believe that the human spirit exists eternally as a part of the ‘Universal Spirit’. There are plenty of ideologies that state the concept of the existence of the soul through their fragmented perception of reality. From the ancient Greek philosophers [i.e. Aristotle & Plato] to the modern-day Buddhist, such as Dalai Lama; the manifesto of the existential aspect of the soul is slightly understood to mankind through different religions. The irony of the mindfulness of spirituality, which is mutual with the global mass, is clear evidence that we are interconnected. In a recent trend, people interpret this as ‘energy’ that is felt among individuals who ‘vibrate’ on higher consciousness. Of course, it means that there are levels on the planes of understanding this matter. Not everybody has experiences that allow them to incorporate into this ideology. The fashionable terminology which is being used in this trend is “Spiritual Awakening”. Something people would say can only be felt by those who are highly intuitive & self-aware. Developing a systematic way of classifying one’s behavior through positive & negative ‘vibration’ received by those who are not spiritually inclined. The problem with this philosophy is the aspect of impracticality, and not being regulated to the standard of living. The idea of it cannot sit well with those who are pessimistic and pragmatic. There are clear indicators of it, in our daily lives, within our social circle. For example, the state of meditation is the source for some people to connect with themselves and recharge. The art of adapting to a form for individuals who tend to generate ‘inner peace’ within, which is permeated through a ‘frequency’ that reduces their stress levels of the body. In some cases, admiration of nature is a common source of feeling hypersensitive for those who have an innate sense of spirituality. Relatively, some people find a sense of liberation in praying or in worshipping their God. Basically, all this can is perpetuated as a source that deems significant for keeping individuals in check with reality while operating in a highly functionated system of life.

In my humble opinion, May God forgive me for addressing this in a manner that could potentially be far from the ‘haqq’ [truth]; as I don’t hold a position to make religious judgment. There hasn’t been an in-depth analogical discussion in the matter of metaphysics, and science behind mysticism, among the scholars of Islam throughout history because it’s understood that the reality of the unseen [metaphysical] is beyond human logic. We believe that God [The Absolute Cause & The Universal Witness] is of the Creator of seen and unseen.  It’s evident through the Qur’an about the indication of ‘Ilm-al-Ghayb’ [knowledge of unseen], as it states:

They ask you [O Muhammad] concerning the ‘Rooh’ (Soul). Say: ‘It is one of the things, the knowledge of which is only with my Lord. And of knowledge, you (mankind) have been given very little.” [Qur’an; 17:85]

God is essentially The All-Knowing and allowed the Prophets to attain ‘Hikmah’ [wisdom] & ‘Ilm’ [knowledge] through His [The All-Aware] Omniscience. For example, among his many creations are the angels and ‘jinns’ (supernatural) that could be classified under the possibility of metaphysics. The miracles performed by the Prophets could potentially be the case of the metaphysics which only God [The Supreme Being] is capable and in control of. In Qur’an, it is said about the children of Adam testifying to God (Allah) as their Lord when he (P.B.U.H) was created. The angels were commanded by God to prostrate before Adam, and they did right away, except for ‘Iblees’ [Devil: Satan, the commander of jinns (evil ones) by the permission of God], who refused to do so out of arrogance [Due to Pride; A foul Sin].

And [mention] when your Lord took from the children of Adam – from their loins – their descendants and made them testify of themselves, [saying to them], “Am I not your Lord?” They said, “Yes, we have testified.” [This] – lest you should say on the day of Resurrection, “Indeed, we were of this unaware.” [Qur’an; 7:172]

He [The Exalted] brought forth the spirits of all humanity from Adam’s newly created body. Their first act was to acknowledge God’s unity, and to pledge their submission to God as their Absolute Sovereign. This constitutes the first divine covenant. In giving humans life and reason, God imposes upon them an obligation to obey Him and the Messengers. As verse 172 goes on to explain, their universal acknowledgment of an absolute ‘deity’ [God] as their Lord means that on the day of resurrection, they cannot claim that they were unaware of the need for obedience in order to enter in paradise.

Indeed, it is apparent through Qur’an that the ‘Rooh’ [Spirit] is a heavenly matter which is essentially blown by an angel in a form of life given to the fetus in mother’s womb as it develops into a living being.  According to Muslims, as we are born, the ‘Rooh’ is transmitted in the form of ‘Nafs’ [Ego to Human Psyche: The Self]. Therefore, we then take account of ideologies taught to us within our surroundings. And, learn to adapt to social norms through different environments according to our nature.

Stages of Experiencing Spiritual Bliss [2]

Three types of bliss that a soul wishes for. First is one that is extrinsic to the person’s being. It is temporary as it is derived from the presence of another entity. For example, the bliss associated with wealth. The second bliss involves the body and form. It includes good health, a balanced temperament, a good and well-proportioned build, and pure skin. The body is separate from the spirit and is an instrument of it. The body’s bliss is dependant on the spirit’s health and goodness since it is extrinsic to his soul and essence. The third bliss is the true one and it involves the soul, spirit and the heart. It is the bliss that results from the beneficial knowledge. It accompanies a person as he passes through the three abodes: this world, the grave, and the Hereafter. The first only accompany him while he has wealth or fame. The second type is liable to disappear or change when his body weakens. Thus, there is no real bliss except this third one.

Attendance Towards Spiritual Attainment

It is mentioned that Abu Hurayrah (May God be pleased with him) was walking in the market and upon seeing [the Companions] trading and selling he said: “You are all here doing that while the inheritance of the Messenger of God (may God bless him and grant him peace) is being distributed in his Mosque.” Thereafter, they hastened to the mosque only to find a gathering discussing knowledge of the Qur’an and remembrance of God. They asked: “Where is what you mention, O Abu Hurayrah?” He replied: “This is the inheritance of Muhammad being distributed amongst his heirs. It is not like the worldly type you bequeath.” The Prophet’s statement, “So whoever acquires it has gained the most abundant share” represents the greatest, most beneficial and lasting fortune a servant can attain. [Tirmidhi 2682; Abu Dawud 361; Ibn Maja 223. ‘authentic’ according to Albani (Sahi al-Jami’ al-saghir 6297)]

Pursuit of Knowledge

There is this beautiful statement by Mu’adh b. Jabal (God be pleased with him), one of the ‘sahaba’ (Companions) of the Prophet (peace be upon him), on the greatness of the pursuit of Knowledge: [2]

“Acquiring knowledge for God’s sake is piety, pursuing it is [a form of] worship, studying it represents glorification [of God], seeking it out is [a form of] striving, teaching it to those who are unaware is charity, and expending it for one’s family is a pious deed. God is only recognized and worshipped through [knowledge]; and one can only know what is permissible or forbidden and establish ties with relatives through it. It is also one’s companion when one is alone. It guides one to prosperity and supports one in times of hardship, aids one’s friends, and allows one to become a friend to strangers. It is luminary along the path to Paradise. Through it God elevates some people, thus, along them leaders and guides to what is good, who are to be emulated and well regarded. The angels wish to befriend and anoint them their wings. Everything, whether living or not, will ask for them to be forgiven, including the fish of the sea, the predatory beasts and cattle, the heavens and the stars. Knowledge enlivens the heart, gives light to the eyes and strength to the body. Therefore, it prevents one from becoming ignorant, blind or weak. It allows the servant to reach the highest ranks of the righteous and elite. Contemplating what one knows is tantamount to fasting and studying it is like praying at night. It leads to good deeds and they follow it. The blissful ones are inspired with it, whereas the wretched are forbidden from attaining it. [Hakim, 317; Anu Nu’ym, vol. II, p.211; Haythami 478; al-Muttaqi al -Hindi 28,915. “Authentic” according to Albani (Sahih al-Jami al-saghir 4214)]

The path to the Hereafter is rugged and difficult for most people. This is because their temptations, wishes, and habits conflict with it; therefore, few undertake it.  Some of the Predecessors of knowledge used to supplicate: O God, make me one of Your plants who obey You by doing righteous deeds in accordance with Your will.

In a well-known tradition [the Prophet said]: ‘Once [the spiritual] light enters the heart; it opens up and rejoices.’ It was said: ‘What is the sign of that?’ The Prophet said: ‘Shunning this deceptive abode, seeking out the eternal abode, preparing for death before it comes.[Bayhaqi (shu’ab) 10,108; Hakim 7863. It is ‘weak’ according to Albani (Mishkat 5228)]

In general, seeing is believing for most of us. Therefore, people tend to lean towards paying attention to anything that is visible to them. The concept of intangibility is not considered in the equation of life. For example, the visibility before the naked eye is of the sky; the Sun, Moon & the stars beyond the troposphere. However, the very universe that this world exists in has galaxies far beyond human visibility and comprehension which science is still trying to discover. But, the fact of the matter is that it exists. The mention of it is elaborated in the Qur’an and other scriptures as well. So, really the unquestionable existence of hereafter; heaven & hell doesn’t seem too farfetched. The life on earth is sure pleasing, as it’s God-given, but it’s not eternal. In death, there is a life after which is ultimately the abode for all souls. The reality of death is what makes us human. As a Muslim, the purpose of life is to live in obedience to God out of seeking His pleasure in the life given & the hereafter. This world is only a temporary abode full of distraction and a ‘test’ [trials & tribulations] for a believer. Hence, a Muslim can be ambitious to achieve all sorts of goals in this life. The ultimate end goal set aim for them [Muslims] is eternal pleasures of the bounty from God (Allah).

Arrogance

And the servants of (God) Most Gracious are those who walk on the earth in humility, and when the ignorant address them, they say:

Peace! And when they hear vanity, they withdraw from it and say: Unto us our works and onto you your works. Peace be unto you! We desire not the ignorant; Keep to forgiveness (O Muhammad), and enjoin kindness, and turn away from the ignorant. [Qur’an: 28: 55-57]

The Qur’an is full of all the types of evidence, proofs and correct types of deductions by analogy. Furthermore, God (Exalted is He) commanded His Messenger (May God bless him and grant him peace) to uphold them and debate others: And reason with them in the better way; And argue not with the People of the Book unless it be in (a way) that is better. Only those who are extremely ignorant would deny that [command]. [Qur’an; 16:125] The point is to differentiate between ‘evidences’ and ‘proofs’. According to Ibn Al-Qayyim; the classical scholars of Islam, the evidences are the substantiations based on knowledge, while ‘proofs’ is the term used for anything that reveals the truth, whether it is a manifest token or a proof based on knowledge. God [The Exalted] said: We verily sent Our messengers with clear proofs and revealed with them the Book and the Balance[Qur’an; 57:25] Thus, ‘proofs’ are the signs (verses) that God uses to prove the truthfulness of the messengers, and they include inimitable prophetic miracles. The Book [in this verse is distinct from those signs and it] is what actually calls [people to the guidance]. [2]

The prophet (PBUH) said after his people had immensely harmed him: “O God, forgive my nation, for they have no knowledge.”  [Bukhari 3477; Muslim 4646; Ibn Maja 4025; Ahmad 4366]

God [The Almighty] said: Nay, but those who do wrong follow their own lusts without knowledge. Who is able to guide him whom God hath sent astray? [Qur’an; 30:29] And those who have no knowledge say: Why doth not God speak unto us, or some sign come unto us? The Qur’an is replete with examples wherein knowledge and recognition are absent in the disbelievers. In some instances, He describes them as not having knowledge; sometimes as not having understanding or comprehension, and sometimes that they do not have sense, hear or see. Therefore, lack of insight and knowledge is the reason for having uncertainty or doubt. For most of us, that usually is the case because it’s very easy for the heart to absorb the slightest negativity due to our own selfish desire and ‘Waswasah’ [evil whispers of Shaitaan (Satan)]; who has declared himself to be an open enemy to mankind. If a person does not have true knowledge and is unable to repel [these uncertainties], then manifold doubts will successively come upon his heart until he or she is riddled with them and becomes a skeptic. Indeed, those who rebut against these doubts are allowing themselves to stay guarded and firmly rooted in knowledge.
